Junior Women’s League to host fall conference

The GFWC Ohio Boardman-Poland Junior Women’s League will host the GFWC/OHIO Federation of Women’s Club’s 2013 Northeast District Fall Conference. An evening full of fun, friendship and information will be Sept. 30 at Caf 422 at 8586 South Ave. Registration begins from 5:30-6 p.m. Call to order starts at 6 p.m.

GFWC/Ohio Federation of Women’s Clubs Traveling officers will be in attendance to give remarks and updates on the Community Service Programs and Special Projects. Corky Nosek, GFWC/Ohio Federation of Women’s Clubs President will be attending along with Linda Crish, OFWC director of junior clubs and Yvonne Ford, ORWC director of junior clubs elect.

New restaurant to open

The Shops at Boardman Park will be soon be offering a new option in dining to the Boardman area: DiBella’s Old Fashioned Subs.

DiBella’s will be located next to Quaker Steak and Lube, and offer old-fashioned quality and value in their dining experience. Support group to meet Oct. 16

The Mahoning Valley Fibromyalgia Support Group will meet Oct. 16 from 7-8:30 p.m. Doug Holland will speak on reflexology, the therapy performed on hands and feet to relieve pain in the body. The meeting will be at Bethel Lutheran Church, located at 425 Crestview Drive in Boardman, and all are welcome.

Literary Society to feature best-selling author

Jessica Fellowes, author of “The World of Downton Abbey” and its follow-up, “The Chronicles of Downton Abbey, is the featured author for the 10th Literary Society event, Oct. 1, at 6 p.m. Due to overwhelming response, the event has been moved from the Main Library to Stambaugh Auditorium.

Conversation salon to be Oct. 3

The Friends of PLYMC conversation salon will be Oct. 3 at 6:30 p.m. Come prepared to enjoy conversation with others in a friendly setting. Sponsored by the Friends of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County.

Casino bus trip set

Team Schein is hosting a bus trip to Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh, on Nov. 8.

They will be departing from 760 Boardman Canfield Road, Boardman, at 5 p.m. and will return to the same location approximately 12:30 a.m.

The cost is $30 per person and includes $15 in free play and $5 food voucher. All seats are non-refundable.

ABWA meeting to be Oct. 8

The Mill Creek Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will meet at 6 p.m. Oct. 8 at A La Cart Catering on Lisbon Street in Canfield. Owner Ron Cohen will speak about the recent grand opening of The Valley Marketplace, located at 6121 South Ave. in Boardman. Corn hole tournament set

Legacy Dog Rescue will host a charity corn hole tournament on Sept. 28 at O’Donald’s, located at 6000 Mahoning Ave. in Austintown.

Registration begins at noon. The cost for early registration is $40 per team of two, or $50 the day of. The event will include a cash bar, cash prizes, 50/50 raffle and a Chinese auction.

MVHS Welcomes Cass Warner to Tyler History Center

Cass Warner, granddaughter of the founder of the Warner Bros. movie studio, will speak at the Mahoning Valley Historical Society’s Tyler History Center, located at 325 W. Federal St., in Youngstown at 7 p.m. on Sept. 26. After a brief talk, Warner will screen her award winning 2008 documentary “The Brothers Warner,” follow by a question and answer session. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance at the Arms Family Museum, located at 648 Wick Ave. in Youngstown, by calling 330-743-2589 or by sending a check and a self-addressed stamped envelope to the MVHS, 648 Wick Ave., Youngstown, 44502.

Austintown residents receive degrees

Austintown residents Justin Baran, Daniel Bondi, Jeffrey Cornelius, Natalie Kiriazis, Dana Lucido, Heather McMasters, Jessica Shinosky, Davanzo Tate and Kelly Thomas received degrees at Youngstown State University’s summer commencement ceremonies in Beeghly Center on Aug. 17.

Berick speacks at meeting

The Austintown Optimist Club recently heard from Teresa Berick, the owner of Diamonds in the Rough Consignment Caf on New Road in Austintown. Berick spoke on opening her new and somewhat unusual business in Austintown, which combines both a clothes consignment store and a caf in the same location.

Casino trip to be Oct. 26

The 2013 Pink Ribbon Golf Classic committee is sponsoring a bus trip to the Seneca Allegheny Casino on Oct. 26. All proceeds from this trip will be given to the American Cancer Society. The bus will leave from Fab Limo on Connecticut Ave. in Austintown at 8 a.m. and will depart from Seneca at 5 p.m.

The cost is $35 per person and each player will be given $20 in play and a $5 food coupon.

Rust Belt Theater Company to present NEVERMORE

The Rust Belt Theater Company will present NEVERMORE!, an original musical by Robert Dennick Joki and Josh Taylor, based on the writing of Edgar Allan Poe. The show will take place Sept. 21 at 8 p.m. The performance centers around the inmates of an insane asylum and intertwines more than twenty of Poe’s short stories and poems into the plot, juxtaposed with original music, and choreography by Marisa Zamary.

The cast includes Nicole Zayas, Kage Coven, Geri Dewitt, Taylor Jordyn, Hunter Thomas, Nicholas Forgac, JoEllen Jacob, Josh Taylor, David Cirelli, Marisa Zamary, Beth Farrow, Rachel Clifford, Starr McClure, Celena Coven and Robert Dennick Joki.

Learn about tremendous trees

Tremendous Trees will be Sept. 28 from 1:30-3 p.m. at Fellows Riverside Gardens. SJIHM new lunch program

For the 2013-2014 school year, St. Joseph Immaculate Heart of Mary has announced that it will be offering free and reduced-price meals for students unable to pay the full price for meals or milk served under the National School Lunch and School Breakfast, After School Care Snack or Special Milk Program. Each school office and central office has a copy of the policy, which may be reviewed by any interested party.

Salon offers free military haircuts

The Hour Spa and Salon, located at 5517 Mahoning Ave. in Austintown, will is sponsoring Cuts for Military Kids program. Arms Museum plans Christmas program

Plans for this year’s Memories of Christmas Past are underway at the Arms Family Museum. The Mahoning Valley Historical Society is looking to the Valley community for some help with this year’s display.

Highlights this year will be on local Valley traditions and will include family heirlooms, nativity collections, handmade cigar box doll houses and a large collection from John Garver, inventor of the locally produced Plakie twirler ornaments.

The society is looking for Christmas items related to downtown department stores. McKelveys, McCrorys, Higbees, Strouss-Hirshberg or any other downtown establishment are desirable. Items will be displayed on a short-term loan basis and will be returned to the owner after the exhibit closes in January.
