YSU announces cuts to trim budget

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown State University plans to freeze all discretionary spending for a projected $2.9 million savings, reduce theoperating budget to the tune of $1.4 million in savings, lay off five full-time and four part-time non-faculty employees to save $663,000 and reduce technology expenditures to save $750,000 to address a forecast $6.6 million deficit.

The cuts were announced this morning.

“Three consecutive years of enrollment declines, combined with consistent reductions in state operating appropriations, has resulted in a significant structural budget deficit that requires us to immediately implement cost savings measures,” President Randy J. Dunn said in a news release. “These measures, while extensive, will allow us to balance our budget without impacting academic and student services.”

YSU also plans voluntary furlough or vacation day givebacks for a $230,000 savings and reductions in energy use to save about $150,000. It’s also hoping for increased enrollment and increased overhead from campus auxiliaries including Kilcawley Center and campus housing.
