YMTA recital and reception will be Sunday

The Youngstown Music Teachers Association will begin its 80th year with a celebration recital and reception at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Butler North, 528 Wick Ave.

The recital will feature students Nina Gordon, Claire Colbaugh, Christina Kim, Grace Haddad, Jacob Smotzer, Madeline Grimes and Julia Megown.

Teachers represented are Tina Grant, Sean Baran, Susan Owens and Diane Yazvac.

A special treat will be teachers’ performances by Baran, Grant, and Kristi and Diane Yazvac. A cake and punch reception with scrapbooks and memorabilia on display will complete the recital.

YMTA has more than 40 members in a 60-mile radius including Ohio and Pennsylvania. Teachers are available for lessons in piano, voice, theory, flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon, organ, violin, viola, cello, trumpet and others.

Activities of the YMTA include monthly honors recitals at the Butler North; a scholarship competition for junior and senior Youngstown State University students; an educational project, which, this year, is a master class with Dr. Caroline Oltmanns of the Dana School of Music and Stars of Tomorrow Recital set for Jan. 31, 2014; the Masters Competition, which offers a winners’ recital and cash awards; and the YSU Summer Festival of the Arts Performance.

Officers of YMTA are Diane Yazvac, president; Melva Huebert, president elect; Baran, treasurer; and Bill Klein, secretary.
