UPDATE | Northside nurses' union meets today with local political leaders

YOUNGSTOWN — Leaders of the union representing nurses at ValleyCare Northside Medical Center will meet today with local political officials, says a member of the union’s negotiating team.

John Klimko, who is on the team for the Youngstown General Duty Nurses Association, said Northside nurses who were scheduled off the day of the strike Tuesday have been allowed back to work, but those who missed a shift to strike have been locked out.

Klimko said he did not have a number on how many nurses are back to work and how many are still locked out.

Klimko said he was not sure who called the meeting and when it will take place.

There was a small presence on the picket line about 9 a.m., but several cars passing by honked their horns in support of the union.

The Northside registered nurses, who have worked without a contract since July 2012, conducted what the YGDNA called an “unfair labor practices” strike from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The hospital hired replacement nurses for the strike who had a 72-hour commitment period. Hospital operations have continued as normal since Tuesday.
