Incriminating tapes emerge in Canton murder case
CANTON, Ohio (AP) — A grand jury here will consider the murder case involving incriminating statements in the beating and shooting death of an 87-year-old Pearl Harbor survivor in 2007.
A judge in Canton ruled Wednesday that the aggravated-murder case against 33-year-old Chester Crank will go before a Stark County grand jury.
During the court hearing, a detective said police have obtained undercover tape recordings in which Crank makes incriminating statements about robbing and shooting the victim.
The Repository newspaper of Canton reports police think a fire at the victim’s house was set to cover up Bennie Angelo’s killing.
The suspect is jailed on a $5 million bond.
His defense attorney challenged the undercover recordings and elicited a police admission that no voice-recognition technology had been used.
