YOUNGSTOWN
Forward Nathan Walker has signed a professional contract with the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League, the Youngstown Phantoms announced Tuesday. Walker, 19, becomes the first player in Phantoms’ franchise history to make the jump straight to the AHL.
“Youngstown was great to me — great hockey, great coaching and great teammates to play with last year,” Walker said. “If I didn’t make the move to Youngstown, I don’t think this would be possible at all.”
A native of Sydney, Australia, the 5-foot-10, 185-pound forward became the first Australian to play in the USHL when he made his debut for Youngstown Jan. 11 and scored a goal on his first shift.
“We’re extremely happy and proud that we were able to help him achieve his goals,” Phantoms head coach Anthony Noreen said. “That’s what this program is about and that’s what this league is about — to prepare guys for the next level. We’re extremely proud of Nathan and to now be able to call him an alumnus of the Youngstown Phantoms.”
The Phantoms return to the Covelli Centre for their 2013-14 home opening weekend on Friday and Saturday against the Green Bay Gamblers. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m. Friday and 2:05 Saturday at the Covelli Centre.
Driver dies after crash that killed Ohio athlete
CINCINNATI
An 18-year-old driver died following the single-vehicle crash that killed one Cincinnati football player and injured two others, a hospital spokeswoman said Tuesday. The University of Cincinnati Medical Center confirmed that Sean VanDyne of Hamilton had died. Authorities say the crash occurred as VanDyne was driving with three Cincinnati freshmen returning from the Bearcats’ 14-0 win Saturday night at Miami University in Oxford, 25 miles north of Cincinnati. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
The crash killed offensive lineman Ben Flick of Hamilton and injured receivers Mark Barr of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Javon Harrison, a receiver who also played quarterback at Huber Heights Wayne in suburban Dayton. The three were redshirting and didn’t dress for the game or travel with the Bearcats.
