Beginning immediately, tickets will be required to attend all sporting events sponsored by the school district, the Struthers Board of Education announced during its regular meeting Tuesday.
Tickets previously were required only for varsity football and basketball games, said Joseph Nohra, superintendent, who explained that the district “felt it was time to update” its ticket procedures, particularly its reporting of ticket sales.
Tickets will be issued for every event and also will be color-coded, likely by days of the week, Nohra said. He added that this decision did not stem from any wrongdoing, but rather the desire to make ticket operations more efficient.
“We decided we needed a lot more as far as checks and balances,” Nohra said. “But we’re going to be patient with the community, and we will be flexible.”
In addition, the school district soon will vie for monies from the state’s $250 million Straight A Fund, which provides funds to educational entities within the state that propose creative, cost- effective ways to solve problems and better serve students.
Three letters of intent to apply for Straight A funding already have been submitted by the Struthers School District, Nohra said, adding that the final application deadline is within the next few weeks.
One project for which the district already has submitted its letter of intent is the formation of a radio and television broadcasting group in conjunction with the Austintown and Boardman local school districts, Nohra said. The other two projects involve instruction that occurs remotely, or “outside of the typical school day,” and innovative ways to deliver transportation, he added.
The board also mentioned a safety fair that is tentatively planned for 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 18 at Struthers High School. The fair, which is the district’s first, will feature various safety stations set up to educate all of the district’s students on issues such as gun safety and texting while driving.
Also Tuesday, the board approved several personnel appointments for the current academic year:
Virginia Kehoe-Buzas, health aide at the middle and high schools at a rate of $15.09 per hour for no more than 623 hours per year.
Frances A. Burrell, transportation scheduler for a pro-rated salary of 13/14 of the supplemental amount of $4,000.
Pat Riddick and Kimberly Vanoverbeke, licensed intervention tutors at the high school at a rate of $18 per hour for no more than 20 hours per week.
The board next will meet at 5 p.m. Oct. 22 at the board of education office, 99 Euclid Ave.
