HOWLAND

The Howland Community Stadium Foundation invites the public to attend a kickoff meeting for a new Howland Community Stadium from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today at Leo’s Ristorante, 7042 E. Market St.

The stadium would enhance the band, football, soccer, physical education and springtime softball and baseball programs, organizers say.

The construction would involve no public money and would save the school district more than $1 million in maintenance over the life of the field, said Kevin Wyndham, foundation president.

DeCree sentenced

WARREN

Van DeCree, 59, of Warren, a former All-America football defensive end in 1973 and 1974 for Ohio State University, has begun serving a seven-month prison term after pleading guilty to violating the terms of a sentencing program.

DeCree tested positive for cocaine while undergoing treatment for drug addiction earlier this year and later committed several probation violations, such as providing a phony urine sample to a probation officer.

DeCree played high school football at Warren Western Reserve High School. He was sentenced Monday by Judge Peter Kontos of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.

Vandalism charges

Police have charged two juveniles with vandalism in the destruction of Arrowhead Stadium’s big G sign.

Police Chief Jeff Palmer said the two, both 17, are seniors at Liberty High School.

Palmer said the destruction was a prank that went too far.

The big G was destroyed late Sept. 16. Businesses donated resources and time to build a replacement, and it was up by Friday’s home game against Newton Falls.
