Alliance Community Hospital, 200 East State St., is offering a four-week free smoking-cessation program from 6 to 7 p.m. on Thursdays starting Oct. 31. The program is open to the public. Smoking-cessation patches are not being offered as part of the program.

Free alzheimers workshop for families

Home Instead Senior Care, 45 N. Canfield-Niles Road, Suite 600, is offering a free workshop for family members of people with Alzheimers and other forms of dementia. The workshop, “The Alzheimer’s CARE: Changing Aging Through Research and Education,” is from 5 to 7 p.m. today.

A free Confidence to Care at Home kit, an at-a-glance collection of information, tips and resources to help handle difficult situations, avoid household accidents, encourage engagement and prevent caregiver stress that is designed for any member of the household to reference anytime they need it, will be available.

Free medical clinic

YOUNGSTOWN

MedWorks, a nonprofit organization, is offering a free medical clinic from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 19 at OneHealth Ohio’s Youngstown Community Health Center, 726 Wick Ave.

Services will include physical exams and medical and dental screenings. Appointment times will be taken closer to the clinic. MedWorks, which provides free care to those who find themselves in need regardless of their income level, citizenship or geographic residence, has conducted 20 free medical, dental and vision clinics in Northeast Ohio.

Evening of hope

COLUMBIANA

Cancer patients and survivors, their families and friends are invited for an evening of inspiration and hope as Salem Community Hospital hosts its annual Oncology Seminar at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 7 at the Main Street Theater.

Jonna Tamases, a cancer survivor and award-winning actress, writer and producer, will present her newest live performance, “The Gisele Show: Symphony in Be Flat,” a humorous account of Tamases’ cancer journey.

In addition to Tamases’ show, the Oncology Seminar offers information booths, light refreshments and door-prize drawings. Admission is free, but preregistration is encouraged. Call 330-337-2895.

Volunteer training

POLAND

Hospice of the Valley’s new volunteer training class begins Oct. 18 at Hospice House, 9603 Sharrott Road. Classes are from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. every Friday for five weeks through Nov. 15.

Volunteers will learn what Hospice of the Valley’s team of doctors, nurses, social workers and chaplains do for patients and their families and how volunteers fit into that team.

New volunteers are needed for all areas of Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties and western Pennsylvania. Although the training is at Hospice House this time, volunteers are assigned to patients closer to their homes. For information or to register, call 330-788-1992.
