YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown State University ranks among the top third of similar universities and colleges nationally in Washington Monthly’s 2013 College Guide and Rankings.

The magazine’s rankings, now in their ninth year, lists schools based on the social mobility of their students, research and community service.

“Instead of lauding colleges for closing their doors to all but an elite few, we give high marks to institutions that enroll low- income students, help them graduate, and don’t charge them an arm and a leg to attend,” the magazine said in announcing the rankings.

YSU ranks 208th among 684 master’s degree-level colleges and universities included in the report. YSU is 93rd among 265 master’s-level public universities and colleges.

“YSU’s ranking on this national list is a reflection of our continued efforts to provide a quality education at a great value that results in graduates who go on to succeed in their chosen careers,” YSU President Randy J. Dunn said.

The ranking comes on the heels of Forbes magazine’s including YSU as one of America’s Top Colleges for 2013. YSU also recently placed 21st among nearly 400 post-secondary institutions in Ohio for providing the greatest lifetime return on investment in a report released earlier this summer by AffordableColleges- Online.org.

In addition, a study by OnlineCollegesDatabase.org ranked YSU’s Beeghly College of Education as one of the nation’s top 40 schools for teacher education. And, edCetera, an education technology blog, recently cited YSU as one of 10 schools nationwide for its use of cutting edge technology.

Washington Monthly’s rankings measure student social mobility (percentage of students receiving Pell grants, net price, actual/predicted graduation rates), research (alumni who go on to earn doctorates, total amount of research spending, faculty receiving prestigious awards) and community service (size of ROTC programs, alumni serving in Peace Corps, federal work-study money spent on service; students participating in community service; and full-time staff and academic courses devoted to service).
