Phantoms fall 7-6

ANN ARBOR, Mich.

The Youngstown Phantoms and Team USA combined for 12 goals through 40 minutes, but when the third period rolled around, the offensive fireworks were suddenly snuffed out.

Jeremy Bracco put the U.S. National Under-17 Team up 7-6 less than five minutes into the final frame and the Phantoms were unable to beat relief goalie Luke Opilka on the way dropping their second game of the season Saturday at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube.

Kyle Connor scored twice in the opening period while JJ Piccinich and Kiefer Sherwood both chipped in with a goal and an assist apiece.

Penguin volleyball

The Youngstown State volleyball team went 2-0 at the Red Flash Invitational on Saturday afternoon, beating Akron in four sets and sweeping host Saint Francis Univ.

The victory over Akron (25-10, 25-12, 25-27, 28-26) snapped a 28-match losing streak to the Zips dating back to 1985 and a 17-match skid against teams from the Mid-American Conference.

YSU beat the Red Flash (25-19, 25-22, 25-23) for the second time in two weeks.

Kent blanks YSU soccer

Three players scored a goal apiece as the Kent State soccer team blanked Youngstown State, 3-0.

The Golden Flashes (5-3) got a goal from Jenna Hellstrom at the 6:07 mark and went up 2-0 when Jessacca Girondi scored on a penalty kick in the 38th minute.

Morgan Mah scored an unassisted goal in the 63rd minute against the Penguins (1-7-1).

Ryan Blaney triumphs

Sparta, Ky.

Ryan Blaney finished first Saturday in the NASCAR Nationwide-Kentucky 300 race.

Driving a Ford over the 200 laps at the Kentucky Speedway, Blaney earned a 147.7 rating,

Second went to Austin Dillon in a Chevrolet with a 126.6 rating.

Also, Kenny Meadows won the Bilstein STARS Modified Lite National event, which was shortened three laps due to the expiration of the time limit.

US women to play two soccer exhibitions

cHICAGO

The U.S. women’s soccer team will face New Zealand in a pair of exhibitions next month, a rematch of their meeting in last year’s Olympic quarterfinals.

The Oct. 27 game at Candlestick Park will be the first time the U.S. women have played in San Francisco in their 28-year history.

The teams will then travel to Columbus, Ohio, for a game on Oct. 30.

The United States is 9-1 against New Zealand, including a 2-0 victory in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Olympics.

The Americans went on to win their third straight gold medal in London and are currently the top-ranked team in the world.
