NAMII receives $5 million grant

The National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute on Friday announced that it has received a grant for $5 million.

Although NAMII is based on West Boardman Street, the $5 million will go toward members of its consortium across the country. They work in collaborative groups to develop and further commercialize additive manufacturing, a process that uses resins, plastics and metals to build a product layer-by-layer from three-dimensional software and a printer.

The award went to more than a dozen private companies and universities nationwide, including M-7 Technologies, a manufacturer in Youngstown, which shared in about $2.4 million with 23 other companies.

Both the city of Youngs-town and Youngstown State University were together awarded $219,792 on Friday to strengthen the city’s economy and help create jobs.

The U.S. Economic Development Agency awarded the money to develop and implement a comprehensive economic development strategy for the city.
