Corn hole tournament set

Legacy Dog Rescue will host a charity corn hole tournament on Sept. 28 at O’Donald’s, located at 6000 Mahoning Ave. in Austintown.

Registration begins at noon. The cost for early registration is $40 per team of two, or $50 the day of. The event will include a cash bar, cash prizes, 50/50 raffle and a Chinese auction.

Newcomer’s Club to host meeting

Newcomer’s Club welcomes women who are new or have had a change in their surroundings that live in the Mahoning Valley area. The group will discuss opportunities to participate in various social activities such as once monthly birthday celebrations, needlework, book club, and a movie and lunch group. They also have monthly social groups where couples or singles meet for dinner or movies in the evening. MVHS Welcomes Cass Warner to Tyler History Center

Cass Warner, granddaughter of the founder of the Warner Bros. movie studio, will speak at the Mahoning Valley Historical Society’s Tyler History Center, located at 325 W. Federal St., in Youngstown at 7 p.m. on Sept. 26. After a brief talk, Warner will screen her award winning 2008 documentary “The Brothers Warner,” follow by a question and answer session.

Saxon Club to host dinner

The Youngstown Saxon Club, located at 710 South Meridian Road, will host its next pork-kraut dinner Sept. 22 from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. The price of $8.75 for adults and $5 for children includes dessert and coffee, tea or pop. The public is welcome and take-outs will be available.

Women’s Auxiliary to meet Sept. 24

The Sulmona Valley Women’s Auxiliary will meet on Sept. 24 at noon at Friendly’s Restaurant in Poland. The hostess will be Nancy Niemczura.

Poland Historical Society sets schedule

The Poland Historical Society meets the third Tuesday of each month at the Little Red Schoolhouse, located at 4515 Center Road in Poland Township. Each month the regular business meetings will start at 6:30 p.m. with a free program planned for 7:30 p.m. which are open to the public. The program schedule is as follows:

Oct. 13 – Free fall open house, 1-3 p.m., at the schoolhouse. Activities and pumpkin painting are planned to entertain the children.

Oct. 15 – Regular meeting will include election of the historical society officers and trustees for 2014. Sally Thomas from the Sutliff Museum will speak about the Underground Railroad.

Nov. 19 – Following the business meeting, historical society trustees will talk about why and how “Poland” got its name.

Dec. 17 – Annual Christmas dinner for members will be offered at the schoolhouse.

Mahoning Valley Epilepsy raises awareness

Hundreds of local people will rock on Sept. 21 on the front porch of the Cracker Barrel Old Country Store and Restaurant from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., raising Epilepsy awareness and support for service offered by Mahoning Valley Epilepsy.

Community businesses, families, friends, clubs and organizations sponsor the event or get pledges to occupy the rocking chairs for an hour at a time during the day long event.

There will be live entertainment, raffles and refreshments throughout the day. Participants are given information on first aid for seizures, signs and symptoms of epilepsy, and statistics on the prevalence and seriousness of the disorder.

Those who are diagnosed with epilepsy are happy to chat about what life is like when you are living with Epilepsy.

Casino trip to be Oct. 26

The 2013 Pink Ribbon Golf Classic committee is sponsoring a bus trip to the Seneca Allegheny Casino on Oct. 26. All proceeds from this trip will be given to the American Cancer Society. The bus will leave from Fab Limo on Connecticut Ave. in Austintown at 8 a.m. and will depart from Seneca at 5 p.m.

The cost is $35 per person and each player will be given $20 in play and a $5 food coupon.

Diorio named registered representative

Rust Belt Theater Company to present NEVERMORE

The Rust Belt Theater Company will present NEVERMORE!, an original musical by Robert Dennick Joki and Josh Taylor, based on the writing of Edgar Allan Poe. The show will take place Sept. 21 at 8 p.m. The performance centers around the inmates of an insane asylum and intertwines more than twenty of Poe’s short stories and poems into the plot, juxtaposed with original music, and choreography by Marisa Zamary.

The cast includes Nicole Zayas, Kage Coven, Geri Dewitt, Taylor Jordyn, Hunter Thomas, Nicholas Forgac, JoEllen Jacob, Josh Taylor, David Cirelli, Marisa Zamary, Beth Farrow, Rachel Clifford, Starr McClure, Celena Coven and Robert Dennick Joki.

Garden Forum Flower Show

There will be an autumn flower show on Sept. 21 from noon until 5 p.m. and Sept. 22 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. presented by the Garden Forum of Greater Youngstown at Fellows Riverside Gardens.

Check in at Ford Nature Center to get a list of nature items to track down and document with a digital camera or phone. Everyone is welcome to the digital scavenger hunt, to be Sept. 29 at 2 p.m. This event is especially recommended for families with older children. Easy-moderate rating, miles are up to you.

Search for the pawpaw

The Metro Parks will host a search for the pawpaw Sept. 22 at 2 p.m. What is a pawpaw? Spend part of the first day of autumn with the Metro Parks and you will find out. Meet at Deerpath Trail off Hitchcock Road. The hike has a moderate rating of 1.5 miles.

Breakfast Botany set

Learn about tremendous trees

Tremendous Trees will be Sept. 28 from 1:30-3 p.m. at Fellows Riverside Gardens. Bounding with butterflies

The Metro Parks will host Bounding with Butterflies Sept. 19 and 28 from 11 a.m. until noon at Fellows Riverside Garden. Children ages 3-5 will enjoy learning about and looking for butterflies, reading a story together and creating butterfly craft. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register. Autumn plant sale to be Sept. 28, 29

Fellows Riverside Gardens will host an autumn plant sale Sept. 28 and 29 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Ornamental cabbage, gourds, pumpkins, chrysanthemums, plus a large variety of spring blooming bulbs will be for sale. Call Fellows Riverside Garden for more information.

Farmers and chefs create tastings

Top local chefs will be paired with local farmers or producers, and together they will create delicious tastings from fresh, locally grown produce, meat and other products on Sept. 21 from 6:30-11 p.m. Craft beer pairings, luscious desserts and the music of Gail George and Donkey Engine complete the evening. Cub Scout packs to host round ups

Cub Scouting is a year round family program designed for boys who are in the first grade through fifth grade. Cub Scouting is the largest of the Boy Scouts of America’s three traditional membership programs with approximately. 1.7 million boys and their families involved throughout the United States.

The beginning of the school year is the traditional time for boys and their families to join Cub Scouts but a boy can join at any time. During the month of September, local Cub Scout Packs in Mahoning County and Hubbard, Ohio are hosting recruitment nights called round-ups to give boys and their families an opportunity to experience a little of the fun and adventure that the Cub Scouts experience all year long.

Fall festival set

Poland-Boardman Child Care Center, located at 1940 Boardman Poland Road, is hosting the second annual fall festival Sept. 21 from 1-5 p.m.

The festival will include food, games, a bounce-around, crafts, fire trucks and the MedEvac helicopter.

Arms Museum plans Christmas program

Plans for this year’s Memories of Christmas Past are underway at the Arms Family Museum. The Mahoning Valley Historical Society is looking to the Valley community for some help with this year’s display. Highlights this year will be on local Valley traditions and will include family heirlooms, nativity collections, handmade cigar box doll houses and a large collection from John Garver, inventor of the locally produced Plakie twirler ornaments. The society is looking for Christmas items related to downtown department stores. McKelveys, McCrorys, Higbees, Strouss-Hirshberg or any other downtown establishment are desirable. Items will be displayed on a short-term loan basis and will be returned to the owner after the exhibit closes in January.
