LONDON, Ohio

A Mahoning County family was honored Thursday for conservation practices implemented on their farm.

Harold and Maureen Campbell received one of five Conservation Farm Family Awards during midday ceremonies at the Farm Science Review near London. Harold Campbell and his son, Ben, who are partners in the farm business, were on hand to accept the honors.

The Farm Science Review is a three-day agricultural research and trade show coordinated annually by Ohio State University.

The conservation awards, presented on the final day of the Review each year, were started in 1984 and are sponsored by Ohio Farmer Magazine, Ohio Farm Bureau and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources as a way of promoting conservation practices. To date, more than 150 farm families have been honored.

The Campbells raise hay, oats and cattle on 600 acres in Mahoning County.

“Conservation practices include no-till, cover crops, crop rotation, grassed waterways, filter strips, contour strips and livestock exclusion fencing,” said Tim White, editor of Ohio Farmer.

Harold Campbell has served on the Mahoning Soil and Water Conservation District board, and the family has been active in mentoring Future Farmers of America students.

“We appreciate the recognition and do everything we can to keep the soil better for the next generation,” Harold Campbell said.
