Briefcase broken open

NILES

The Youngstown Bomb Squad responded to Central Baptist Church, 1301 North Road, on Thursday morning for a briefcase on the steps in front of the church’s main doors that was feared to have a possible explosive inside.

The bomb squad used a device that shoots water under pressure at the briefcase about 11:45 a.m., breaking it open and revealing that it contained only papers, not explosives.

Niles police were trying to locate the owner of the briefcase to find out why it had been left there.

Church member Harlan Williams of Niles said he found the briefcase, which had a combination lock on it, when he arrived at the church at 9:30 a.m.

He called Niles police, who responded to the church and decided to call the Bomb Squad.
