Mazeroski to sell 1960 Series memorabilia
PITTSBURGH
Former Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman Bill Mazeroski is selling memorabilia from the most iconic moment of his Hall of Fame career.
Mazeroski will have several personal items auctioned at the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory in November, including the jersey he wore in Game 7 of the 1960 World Series. Mazeroski hit a solo home run leading off the bottom of the ninth to lift the Pirates to a championship.
Mazeroski said the jersey, which is expected to go for more than $100,000, has been sitting around collecting mothballs for years. He also plans to sell six Gold Glove Awards and the 1960 Babe Ruth Award.
Local rugby club has home game Saturday
YOUNGSTOWN
Steel Valley Rugby Club will play its first home game of the year Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Bailey Park on the city’s East Side.
The local team, 1-0 on the season, will play the Columbus Castaways. Steel Valley opened its season Sept. 7 with a 37-0 victory over North Central Ironguts at Fairmont, W.Va.

Sharon Speedway spotlight on Modifieds
HARTFORD
The spotlight Saturday at Sharon Speedway will be on the three Modified classes with bonus monies available and the first appearance of the Vintage Mods. The “Steel Valley Thunder” program will include the Governor Insurance Agency DIRTcar Big-Block Modifieds, Barris Supply RUSH Late Models, Summit Racing Equipment Modifieds, HTMA/Precise Racing Products Econo Mods, and Deforest Used Parts Mini Stocks. Race time is 7 p.m.
Fresh off the big $3,500 to-win “Russ King Memorial” the DIRTcar Big-Block Modifieds will be battling for an extra $500 prize on thanks to Tom’s Sewer and Drain. A typical field of cars will mean Saturday’s winner will receive $1,600, however, if 24 or more cars are present $2,000 will await the Governor Insurance Agency feature winner.
The Vintage Modifieds, which travel around the region, have replaced the Gibson Insurance Agency Stock Cars for this week in their first ever appearance at the track. Pits open at 4 p.m. Saturday with grandstands at 5 and racing at 7.
Lordstown hosts Jean Ann Smith Invitational
LORDSTOWN
The Lordstown athletic department will host the 14th annual Jean Ann Smith Cross Country Invitational on Saturday at the Village Park. The high school race begins at 10 a.m., followed by the junior high race.
Schools scheduled to participate include South Range, Lowellville, Jackson-Milton, Western Reserve, Lordstown, Brookfield, Mineral Ridge, LaBrae, Southington, Bristol and Badger.
Kiwis close within 1 win of America’s Cup
SAN FRANCISCO
The America’s Cup is staying in America for at least one more day, thanks to the wind that blows in through the Golden Gate Bridge and the strong tide that flows out to sea. Not long after Emirates Team New Zealand won Race 11 Wednesday to reach match point in the America’s Cup against powerhouse Oracle Team USA, Race 12 was postponed because the wind exceeded the safety limit. Organizers will try again today to get in two races, if necessary.
