BOWLING GREEN

Bowling Green blocked 11 Youngstown State attacks and posted a team attack percentage of .288 to defeat the Penguins’ volleyball team in three sets Tuesday at the Stroh Center. The Falcons had five blocks in the final set, including one on match point. Bowling Green took the first two sets 25-13, 25-16 before winning the final one 29-27.

The result spoiled YSU head coach Mark Hardaway’s return to Bowling Green. He was an assistant for the previous eight seasons and 10 years total at BGSU before becoming YSU’s head coach in 2012. Former Brown Marecic signs with 49ers

SANTA CLARA, Calif.

Owen Marecic joined the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday, signing a one-year contract two weeks after being released by Cleveland. If San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh had his way, Marecic would have been with the 49ers on draft day in 2011.

Marecic won’t be rushed into the starting lineup. Bruce Miller remains the 49ers starter at fullback. Harbaugh will find a way to use Marecic, perhaps in ways he used him when they both were at Stanford. “There’s nothing specific,” Marecic said of his possible role with the 49ers. “I’m going to work hard every day to do whatever role I can fill. They told me I would be on offense, as the backup fullback, and contribute on special teams.”

The heck do ya mean? ESPN goes to Fargo

FARGO, N.D.

ESPN is calling an audible for its popular College GameDay show by departing from its typical large-campus backdrops — think Michigan and Clemson — and featuring North Dakota State, owners of back-to-back Football Championship Subdivision titles and an early-season victory over a Big 12 team.

“North Dakota State, in a way, is sort of the Alabama of the FCS,” GameDay senior coordinating producer Lee Fitting said in explaining why the show is coming to Fargo on Saturday. “They’re two-time defending national champions, ranked No. 1 in the current poll, ten national titles for the program. The next question was, why not?”

The news made fans of Bison Nation ecstatic over the imminent arrival of Lee Corso and Co.
