Suburban League cross country meet today

CANFIELD

The Suburban League Cross Country Championship meet will be held today at the Canfield Fairgrounds according to the following schedule: 4:30 p.m., high school girls; 5:05, high school boys; 5:35, middle school girls; 5:55, middle school boys.

Boardman’s boys and Poland’s girls are the defending team champions, while Boardman’s Mark Hadley returns to defend his individual championship. Last year’s girls champ, Emma Lunne of Canfield, has graduated – the top returning girls include Allison Parks of United, Jordan Grantonic of Boardman and Morgan Buckley of Howland. Athletes from 37 area schools will be competing.

Former East Palestine, Malone golfer qualifies

NEW ALBANY

Former East Palestine and Malone College golfer Scotty Jones has qualified to play in the USGA Mid-Amateur Championship scheduled Oct. 5-10 at the Country Club of Birmingham in Alabama. On Monday Jones shot a 2-under 70 at Winding Hollow golf Club to win the local qualifier ty two strokes.

In 2006 Jones, who resides in Dennison, Ohio, qualified to play in the U.S. Public Links Championship and in 2007 he played in the U.S. Amateur Championship.

Volleyball match raises funds for the ‘Cure’

MINERAL RIDGE

Mineral Ridge will play host to Springfield on Oct. 1 in a volleyball match dubbed “Volley for the Cure” beginning at 5:30 p.m. The event promotes breast cancer education, awareness and fund-raising.

Several raffles, giveaways and games are scheduled. Any fan wearing pink to the match will be entered in a drawing to win a gift card. All proceeds will benefit the northeast Ohio affiliates of Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Red Wings top Pens, 4-1 in preseason game

PITTSBURGH

Adam Almquist scored two power-play goals in the second period and Tomas Tatar had a goal and assist to lead the Detroit Red Wings past the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-1 on Monday night in a preseason game. Paval Datsyuk also scored for Detroit, netting a second-period, unassisted goal. Almquist scored at 6:10 and 11:50 with shots from the point to put the Red Wings ahead 3-1. Brandon Sutter netted the lone Pittsburgh goal at 1:05 of the second, to get the Penguins even at 1.

Bucs safety Goldson suspended by league

NEW YORK

Hard-hitting Tampa Bay safety Dashon Goldson has been suspended for one game for flagrant and repeat violations of NFL safety rules prohibiting hits to the head and neck area of defenseless players. Goldson was penalized for unnecessary roughness in the second quarter of Sunday’s game against New Orleans for making direct, helmet-to-helmet contact with a defenseless receiver, Darren Sproles

The suspension was imposed Monday by NFL vice president of football operations Merton Hanks. Goldson can’t practice this week nor play in the Buccaneers’ game on Sunday against New England. The violation was Goldson’s fifth for unnecessary roughness since 2011 and his second in the first two weeks of the 2013 season.

Two Browns involved in traffic incidents

CLEVELAND

Two Browns players were involved in traffic incidents on Monday. Wide receiver Greg Little, who has a history of driving troubles, was issued three traffic violations after being stopped at 1 a.m., Cleveland police said.

Little, who recently settled a ticket for driving with an expired license plate and was ticketed for speeding, was cited for a stop-sign violation, change of course and driving with a suspended license, Sgt. Sammy Moore said.

Also, guard Shawn Lauvao got his car stuck on a curb when he drove into a downtown construction zone. Team spokesman Zak Gilbert said Lauvao was not injured and there was no alcohol involved.
