Speed factor in crash

YOUNGSTOWN

Police say speed was a factor in a one-vehicle accident about 6:45 p.m. Sunday at Hunter Street and Indianola Avenue on the South Side that killed a passenger in a car.

Police said a car driven by Deone Cray, 19, of Youngstown was eastbound on Indianola Avenue approaching Hunter Street when the car went out of control and hit a vacant building. Killed in the accident was Delouis Clark III, 31, of Youngstown.

Cray was treated for injuries at St. Elizabeth Health Center. The accident remains under investigation.

The eastbound lane of West Federal Street will be closed from Hazel Street to Vindicator Square for a private celebration for the Youngstown Business Incubator from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday.

2 arsons in city

City firefighters dealt with two arsons late Sunday and early Monday. Just after 10 p.m. Sunday, crews were called to 1460 Elm St. where they found a heavy fire in a two-story brick building. The building was allowed to burn down because of previous fires. Damage was listed at $3,000.

At 2:45 a.m. Monday, crews were called 1942 Glenwood Ave. where they found a home on fire there while also encountering the heavy smell of gasoline. Reports said it was the second fire at the home in two days. Damage was listed there at $3,000 also.

Driver cited in crash

A five-car accident that included a Poland Township cruiser led to one driver’s receiving a citation. No one was injured.

The driver cited for assured cleared distance, Nicholas Maillis, 17, of Poland, did not stop in time to avoid hitting the stopping vehicle in front of him while driving down state Route 170 at 3:30 p.m. Friday.

The collision caused the additional two cars in front of the one Maillis hit to hit the cars in front of them. The last car in the lineup to be hit was the Poland Township cruiser, which sustained minor damage.

2 special meetings

The Poland Board of Trustees will host two special meetings today at the Poland Township Government Center, 3339 Dobbins Road. The purpose of the first meeting at 6 p.m. will be a discussion with the police union representative, and a second meeting at 7 p.m. to meet with the Poland Park advisory board.

Facing drug charges

A Youngstown man now faces drug charges after he was stopped by police Saturday for driving on McCartney Road with several objects blocking his view and for not having a light illuminating his rear license plate.

Police found that the driver, 43-year-old Antwan M. Grissett, had 10 plastic bags of suspected crack cocaine as well as two plastic bags of suspected marijuana in his car. Officers also confiscated $151.

Grissett was charged with trafficking in drugs, possession of drugs and 12 counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, in addition to the traffic charges.

He will be arraigned today in Campbell Municipal Court.

Unauthorized card use

LOWELLVILLE

Police believe the home health-care provider for an 84-year-old Lowellville woman stole her credit card and used it for several unauthorized transactions totaling $555.

The 84-year-old woman recently had suffered a stroke and did not report the theft until several weeks after the incident, which occurred in late August, according to police reports.

The stolen card was used at a number of local businesses, including the Walmart in Liberty and several gas stations in Youngstown.

Police have issued a warrant for the home health-care provider’s arrest. She has since been fired from her position, and faces charges of unauthorized use of property and theft, according to police.

Rally before meeting

SEBRING

Sebring Local Education Association will have a rally Wednesday to urge a completion of contract negotiations with the district school board.

The rally will before the school board meets at 5:30 p.m. in front of Sebring McKinley High School. The SLEA has been working without a contract since Aug. 31.

The union said negotiators met only twice during the summer. There have been two sessions since the new school year began. SLEA and the board representatives last met to negotiate last Wednesday.

Heidi Shepherd, SLEA spokeswoman, said, some progress was made last week, and there is another bargaining session scheduled for Sept. 23.

Facing several charges

WARREN

A Niles man threatened to kill his girlfriend and her 2-year-old son because he needed $20, according to The Vindicator’s broadcast partner 21 WFMJ-TV.

A woman called Warren police Sunday, claiming that Eric N. Taylor, 26, ransacked her house and threatened to kill her and her toddler if she did not give him the money.

She said she rushed out of the Logan Avenue house to get away from Taylor. The woman also claimed that Taylor cracked her van’s windshield, broke her television and caused other damage in her home.

When officers arrived at the home, they found the suspect hiding on the roof. Taylor is charged with assault, aggravated menacing, criminal mischief and criminal damages.
