McDONALD

The McDonald School District will see a vast improvement in its projected appropriations for 2013-14.

Treasurer Bill Johnson explained the district had a carry-over general-fund balance of just $93,000 in 2012-13. The schools came out of state fiscal emergency in the winter 2012.

“Last year, we basically had no general-fund carry-over,” Johnson said at Monday night’s board meeting.

But in the 2013-14 appropriations, the district has a carry-over of $666,945 in the general fund.

Johnson said current indications are the district will receive $300,000 more in state foundation money, with an expected $3.7 million over last year’s $3.4 million.

The total amount appropriated in all funds for 2013-14 is $7.8 million. The general fund now stands at $6 million, compared with $5.2 million last year.

The board also approved the emergency purchase of a new school bus for $78,400. One of the district’s buses broke down last week.

The bus will be purchased through Rush Bus Centers, Akron, and it is hoped it will be in service by the start of next week. The board waived official bidding on the bus because it is needed immediately.

School officials asked for help from the Weathersfield School District last week for a bus and will again this week.

The board also accepted a $3,400 donation from the Cherotti Family Fund of Akron Community Foundation for the football fund.
