Free health screenings, breast exams and mammograms are available from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday during Joanie’s Promise Night at the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center on the campus of St. Elizabeth Health Center, 1044 Belmont Ave.

Joanie’s Promise Night is free and open to uninsured and underinsured women 40 to 64 who meet financial eligibility requirements.

The event is among several that seek to fulfill Joanie’s Promise to provide breast-care services to every woman who needs them. To register, call 330-480-3151. On-site parking is free.

Joanie’s Promise is funded by a grant from the HMHP Foundation. The largest fundraiser benefiting Joanie’s Promise is the Panerathon.

Flu-shot clinic

The Niles City Health Department is offering a flu-shot clinic for adults 19 and older at the Niles SCOPE Center, 14. E. State St., from 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 27. Appointments can be made by calling SCOPE at 330-544-3676. Medicare and Anthem Senior Advantage Cards will be accepted. All others will be charged $20.

Plant diet program

Humility of Mary Health Partners is offering a program about the benefits of a plant-based diet and locally grown foods for its fall Women in Touch session.

“A Healthy Life from the Roots Up: How Local Food Can Improve Your Diet” is at 5 p.m. Oct. 8 at Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center, 7440 South Ave, Boardman; and 5 p.m. Oct. 22 at Ciminero’s Banquet Centre, 123 N. Main St., Niles.

The featured speakers are Dr. Kathleen Padgitt, a local physician who will explain how a plant-based diet can benefit people and prevent chronic diseases, and Melissa Miller, marketing director of the Lake-to-River Food Cooperative, who will discuss ways to access a food grown in the Mahoning Valley.

Alzheimer’s Association meeting

The Alzheimer’s Association Greater East Ohio Area Chapter is having its 2013 town-hall meeting from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at The Natatorium, 2345 Fourth St. The deadline to register is Monday. Call 1-800-272-3900.

The annual program invites those living with Alzheimer’s disease, caregivers, family, friends and health-care professionals to provide input on their personal journeys and to discuss ways to make Alzheimer’s disease a national priority through advocacy and funding.

Information shared in the town-hall meeting will be forwarded to members of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate who represent the Alzheimer’s Association’s Greater East Ohio Area Chapter.

Indian scholarship

HARRISBURG, PA.

The Foundation of the Pennsylvania Medical Society is offering a $2,000 Scholarship from the Endowment for South Asian Students of Indian Descent.

Students must be enrolled full time in their second, third or fourth year at an accredited Pennsylvania medical school.

Drs. Jitendra M. Desai and Saryu J. Desai, both of Sewickley, Pa., initiated the scholarship within the foundation to provide an opportunity for South Asian Indian students who demonstrate academic excellence.
