Lectures on home goods of the 1860s

The Sutliff Museum’s 8th annual Victorian Collections and Coffee series will begin at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday with a lecture titled “The Legacy of the Civil War: Antiques of the 1860s.”

All of the lectures will be in the Thomas Meeting Room of the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, 444 Mahoning Avenue NW.

Admission is free, and the building is handicapped accessible.

Delivering Tuesday’s lecture will be Cynthia Marshall, owner of the shop “Antiques” in Butler, Pa.

She will discuss the kinds of memorabilia that are still available in the marketplace today.

Marshall will also discuss how to recognize genuine items from the 1860s and what values they command.

She will display lamps, buttons, jewelry, photos and clothing from the era.

Attendees are invited to bring an item or two from their own collections for Marshall to informally appraise.

The lecture will be preceded by coffee and pastries at 9 a.m.

The program will end at noon.

The second lecture will be “Quilts of the Civil War Era” on Oct. 10.

It will be delivered by Susan Catanzarito of Hilliards, Pa., an authority on antique quilts.

Catanzarito will bring expertly made reproductions of old quilt patterns as well as authentic 1860s-era quilts to discuss.

Because of space limitations, each attendee may bring one quilt from his or her collection for Catanzarito to discuss.

The third and final program will be Nov. 19, with a lecture by Ellen King on “Civil War Era Pattern Glass.”

An appraiser, historian, dealer and writer on many different kinds of antiques, King will focus on antique glass tableware of the 1860s, how it was made, how it reflected the styles of the times and what its value is today.

Audience members are invited to bring in one or two pieces from their own collections for King to identify and informally appraise.
