Equipment donated to Ursuline Sisters

CANFIELD

Kathy Prasad, owner of The Woodlands LLC, and her son, Frank Antalocy, the company’s chief financial officer, recently donated a NuStep T5xr Recumbent Cross Trainer, worth approximately $6,500, to the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown.

The physical-therapy equipment will help the sisters who have had recent orthopedic surgery, as well as help all sisters maintain good health for ministry, said Sister Mary McCormick, director of finance for the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown.

The Woodlands operates AustinWoods in Austintown and HamptonWoods and Woodlands Assisted Living, both in New Springfield.

Food preferences of birds to be topic

The Audubon Society/ Mahoning Valley will host “Birds, Bugs and Botany” at 7 p.m. Sept. 24.

Judy Semroc, conservation specialist with the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, will give a speech detailing where to look for birds based on their food preferences.

Particulars will include plant species, the insects that use them and the birds that feed upon them.

The event will be at the Mill Creek MetroParks Farm, state Route 46, Canfield. For information, call 888-846-8851.

Award nominations being accepted

Nominations still are being accepted for awards honoring Ohioans who carry on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Awards honoring such individuals and organizations will be given at the 2014 Ohio Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Celebration on Jan. 16, 2014, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Columbus.

Nominations are due to the Ohio Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Commission by Sept. 25.

The awards are sponsored by the commission, which is housed in the Equal Opportunity Division of the Ohio Department of Administrative Services.

Police standoff ends peacefully

Wallace R. Heck, 45, of the 500 block of Glacierview Drive, was hospitalized in St. Elizabeth Health Center after a standoff came to a peaceful conclusion Sunday afternoon.

Police were called to Glacierview about 12:30 p.m. after being notified that someone had fire a shot in the residence.

When police arrived, two women, including Heck’s fiancee, had exited the house. The fiancee told police Heck had fired a shot into the floor.

Police set up a perimeter around the house.

Mahoning Valley Crisis Response Team came on the scene about 2:45 p.m. and asked Heck to exit the house.

About 25 minutes later, he surrendered to officers without incident.

The police report indicated Heck was off his medication and agitated.

In the house, police found a gun belt with a loaded magazine and loaded .40-caliber Smith and Wesson. They took them into evidence.

Man killed in crash

A man died after the car he was driving crashed into a building and flipped on its side, according to The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, 21 WFMJ-TV.

The accident happened about 6:30 p.m. Sunday on Indianola Avenue.

Youngstown police and fire crews cut the passenger out of the car, WFMJ said.
