Mahoning Valley Historical Society

Mahoning Valley Historical Society hosted a free Founders Day open house Sunday at the Arms Family Museum, 648 Wick Ave., Youngstown, in celebration of the society’s 138th anniversary.

The museum: Built in 1905 in the Arts & Crafts design, the museum is the former home of Olive F.A. Arms. She died in 1960 and willed the house, known as Greystone, to the historical society.

New exhibits: “Twentieth Century Style: The Jeanne D. Tyler Collection” features historic garments worn by three generations, Jeanne D. Tyler; her mother, Marion Struthers Thomas Deibel; and grandmother, Helen Struthers Thomas. Day dresses, gown, handbags and shoes are featured and represent donations over four decades from Tyler, who has been involved with the historical society for more than 40 years. The Wirt Collection features items amassed by Benjamin Franklin Wirt, a Valley politician and lawyer. It includes Native American pieces, Asian decorative pieces, art nouveau items and Egyptian earrings.

Upcoming events: “An Evening with Cass Warner” at 7 p.m. Sept. 26 at Tyler History Center, 325 West Federal St., Youngstown; “History to Go — Zombie Crawl” at 3 p.m. Oct. 26 at Oak Hill Cemetery; “History to Go — Civil War and David Tod” at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 7 at Tod Homestead Cemetery Chapel; and “Memories of Christian Past” opening at 1 p.m. Nov. 23 and continuing through Jan. 5, 2014.
