The Canfield Little Cards 10U football team bounced back from a loss last week with two wins on Sept. 7 and 8.
On Sept. 7, the Cards hosted the St. Charles Lions. A Canfield fumble on the first play of the game gave St. Charles the ball in Canfield territory. The Card defense forced a four and out and the offense was back on the field. The Cards drove 64 yards behind the strong offensive line play of center Mike Crawford, guards Brennen Beil and Daniel Gibson, tackles Andrew Morchak and Anthony Orr, and ends Nick Cavoulas and Pat Guerrieri. Conor Hritz got the first score of the game and a pass from Logon Torok to Guerrieri gave Canfield an 8-0 lead. The Cards defense forced another four and out. There was some nice running by Nathan Fiorenza, who got Canfield to the Lion 12 yard line where Luke Holland took it in the endzone. Torok’s pass to Fiorenza added the two-point conversion.
In the second half, Canfield’s Evan Perry and Nick Cavoulas had some big runs to get the Cards down to the Lion six yard line where they turned the ball over on downs. The Lions controlled the ball most of the fourth quarter, and were able to get a late score on a six yard quarterback keeper.
On Sept. 8, the Little Falcons came to Canfield. Canfield’s defense smothered the Falcons offense for much of the game. The Cards forced a four and out on the first Falcon possession and took over on the Falcon 40. Three Torok passes later, Guerrieri scored. Guerrieri also caught the two-point conversion. The Cards defensive line, including Luke Holland, Andrew Morchak, Jeff Shaughnessy and Evan Beistel had pressure on the Falcons, forcing an errant pass and resulting in an interception by Logan Torok on the Falcon 45. Two plays later, Torok went 40 yards for a score. Conor Hritz added the conversion.
Beistel recovered a Falcon fumble on the next series and Canfield took over at the Falcon 30. Two carries later Nathan Fiorenza scored and Holland added the conversion (24-0). Another defensive stand gave Canfield the ball at the Falcon 12. Hritz got the ball and two carries later was in the endzone. Holland added the conversion (32-0). An interception by Fiorenza gave Canfield the ball on the Falcon 45. Luke Holland scored on the sweep right to end the first half scoring (40-0).
In the third quarter, the Cards had a long drive down the field. Nick Cavoulas scored for the Cards. The fourth quarter was controlled by the Falcons, but they were unable to get in the endzone.
