The civil-service exam that will determine the permanent replacement for former Police Chief Gus Sarigianopoulos has been rescheduled for Sept. 30. Vying for the position are Sgt. Drew Rauzan, who has acted as interim chief since late June; Sgt. John Rusnak; and Sgt. David Taybus, who served as interim chief from December until Rauzan’s appointment.
Rauzan said all three candidates agreed to request an extension.
The exam originally was scheduled for mid-August, then for early September and now for late September. Sarigianopoulos retired after 27 years.
Tailgate party
Youngstown
Youngstown City Schools will host a tailgate party from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday to kick off the new school year.
The tailgate party will be at Harding Park during the football games between seventh- and eighth-graders and the junior varsity. Harding Park is behind the Rayen Stadium on Ohio Avenue.
Attendees must bring their own food and soft drinks, and no alcoholic beverages are allowed. Vendors aren’t invited.
Individuals who want to reserve a tailgate spot must pre-register at the switchboard on the first floor of the Youngstown Board of Education, I.L. Ward Building, 20 W. Wood St. There will be no charge for a tailgate spot, but space is limited. Reservations will be on a first-come, first-served basis. For information, call 330-744-6900.
Council meeting
Lowellville
Lowellville Village Council meets at 6:45 p.m. today in city hall, 140 E. Liberty St. On the agenda will be the swearing-in of two new part-time police officers as well as one emergency medical technician and one EMT/firefighter.
Joshua Kozic of Lowellville and Daniel Baker of Struthers will join the police department, while Lynn Cataldo and Tommy Pilkington, both of Lowellville, will be the newest additions to the fire department.
