Three killed in 2-car crash on I-79 in Mercer County

SHEAKLEYVILLE, PA.

Three people were killed in a two-car crash late Friday afternoon on Interstate 79 in Deer Creek Township near Sheakleyville in Mercer County, Pa.

Dead are Robert J. Neubert II, 62, of Amherst, N.Y., driver of one of the vehicles; Susan L. Thomas, 54, of Sewickley, Pa., driver of the second car; and Mary G. Carmody, 44, of Sewickley, a passenger in Thomas’ vehicle.

Neubert was transported to UPMC Horizon Greenville by ambulance where he was pronounced dead. Thomas and Carmody were pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police, Neubert was southbound on I-79 when he lost control of his car. He traveled east into the median for about 300 feet then into the northbound lanes where he hit the left front portion of Thomas’ car.

The impact caused Thomas’s northbound car to vault over a guardrail and land on its right side about 63 feet off the east berm. Neubert’s vehicle came to rest against a guardrail off the east berm. All three victims were wearing seat belts, police said.
