Making Kids Count needs volunteers in Struthers

Staff report

STRUTHERS

Volunteers are needed for an after-school tutoring program with Making Kids Count for a Struthers school.

Making Kids Count Inc. is a nonprofit organization that works to ensure every child feels special, regardless of circumstances, by focusing on the areas of school support, little extras and parental assistance.

The organization operates a variety of programs in Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana and Ashtabula counties.

Volunteers help children in the community by assisting Making Kids Count to enrich the reading fluency, math skills, overall academic success and confidence of a student in a safe learning environment.

The program requires volunteers in the Youngs-town area who can give about an hour of their time weekly. Volunteers work with fourth-grade students from Struthers Elementary School, 520 Ninth St., on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:05 to 3:15 p.m. The program will aid students and families who need extra help in the classroom but do not have the means to pay for a tutor.

Along with community members who volunteer, future teachers studying at Youngstown State University also will help tutor children.

The program will run from October through May, and the organization can work with the schedule of the volunteer. Volunteers may choose to give their time during the fall or spring semester, or both.

All prospective volunteers will have required background checks and documentation to work with students. If you do not have a background check and would like to participate in the program, Valley Renaissance will provide this service at a discounted cost of $12.

Contact Colleen Eisenbraun at 330-758-3434 or email her at colleen@makingkidscount.org if you are interested in becoming a volunteer tutor.
