Hundelt sets record in YSU volleyball setback

Youngstown State senior volleyball player Missy Hundelt registered the 1,000th kill of her career on Saturday as the Penguins dropped a five-game match to Toledo, 25-22, 17-25, 25-18, 19-25, 15-6.

Hundelt’s milestone moment came on the 24th point of the second set, giving her 14 kills in the match.

The senior finished with 19 kills, and she did not have an error until her 28th attempt.

The rest of the lineup struggled against the Rockets as no other player hit above .185.

Hundelt finished with 19 kills on a .341 attack percentage, and she added 16 digs.

Tokyo celebrates win to host 2020 Olympics

TOKYO

Thousands of Tokyo residents cheered in triumph early today after winning the race to host the 2020 Olympics, beating out rivals Istanbul and Madrid despite concerns about a nuclear plant leaking radioactive water.

Long considered a slight favorite, Japan’s capital defeated Istanbul in the final round of voting at the International Olympic Committee meeting in Buenos Aires. Madrid was eliminated in the first round.

Even though it was 5 a.m., a gathering of 1,200 dignitaries and Olympic athletes crammed into a convention hall in downtown Tokyo to celebrate the news. Cheers of “Banzai” filled the hall when the announcement was made that Tokyo had won.

Kiwis beat US in 1st 2 races of America’s Cup

SAN FRANCISCO

Emirates Team New Zealand skimmed above the waves of San Francisco Bay faster and better than defending champion Oracle Team USA on Saturday to win the first two races of the 34th America’s Cup.

With low-key skipper Dean Barker at the wheel of the high-performance, 72-foot catamaran, the Kiwis lost and then regained the lead to win the opening race by 36 seconds.

Team New Zealand, showing better speed and crew work, led the whole way in the second race to win by 52 seconds on a hot, gorgeous day on San Francisco Bay.

Evans wins 4th stage, Dennis keep lead

BLACK DIAMOND, Alberta

Cadel Evans won the fourth stage of the Tour of Alberta on Saturday, and fellow Australian Rohan Dennis held onto the overall lead with one leg left.

Evans, the BMC rider who won the 2011 Tour de France, finished the 105-mile stage in 3 hours, 57 minutes, 18 seconds. Germany’s Simon Geschke, riding for Argos-Shimano, was second in the same time.

Dennis, riding for Garmin-Sharp, was 15th in the stage, 9:44 behind. In the overall standings, Dennis has an 18-second lead over American Brent Bookwalter of BMC.

Dennis won the third stage Friday to take the lead.
