Youngstown State runner Eric Rupe led the Penguins at the 45th Tommy Evans cross country Invitational, placing first.
It was the first time for a male Penguin to finish at the head of the pack of the meet.
Monica Ciarniello led the YSU women, placing seventh.
Rupe finished with a time of 20:23 in the four-mile run while Ciarniello ran 18:50 in the 5K.
Merlo saves day

Sophomore Nicolette Merlo scored her first career goal with just 11:09 left in regulation and the Youngstown State women’s soccer team salvaged a 1-1 double overtime tie against Akron on Friday. The Penguins are 1-3-1 and the Zips are 2-1-2 overall.
At the 78:51 mark, Merlo drilled a rebound from 20-yards out past Akron’s Klaire Adee to knot the game at 1-1 and force overtime.
YSU volleyball

The Youngstown State volleyball team hit a season-best .338 and got double digits in kills from three players to defeat Saint Francis in four sets (25-21, 25-18, 23-25, 25-14) on Friday in the YSU Invitational.
Tulane overcame a seven-point deficit in the second set and went on to defeat YSU 18-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-22 at the meet.
Radio 57 WKBN adds NFL games
YOUNGSTOWN
Clear Channel’s WKBN-AM 570 (Radio 57) has added NFL games to its Sunday lineups, beginning this weekend with the Green Bay Packers-San Francisco 49ers game at 4:25 p.m.
Each Sunday through Sept. 29, WKBN will carry a NFL game following the Cleveland Indians game. Once the Indians’ season ends, Radio 57 will carry a NFL doubleheader each Sunday.
Sister station WNIO-AM 1390 will broadcast all Steelers games as well as the NFL’s Thursday and Monday night games.

Emilei Peterson scored for the Rockets (1-2-2, 0-0-2) about halfway through the first half.
Alyssa Osborne answered for the Braves (4-0-1, 1-0-1) with 15 minutes remaining on an assist from Cheyanne Dickson.
BC defense stops Wake Forest for win in ACC
BOSTON
Andre Williams ran 35 times for 204 yards and a touchdown, and cornerback Bryce Jones had an interception and a fumble recovery to lead Boston College to a 24-10 victory over Wake Forest on Friday night.
Alex Amidon caught five passes for 93 yards and a touchdown for BC (2-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference). The Eagles matched their victory total from last season.

Keselowski claims Nationwide race

Brad Keselowski passed Brian Scott on a restart with 11 laps to go Friday night and pulled away after another restart with six laps remaining to go to win the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Richmond.
Keselowski has five victories and a runner-up finish in his last six series starts.
Jeff Gordon captures pole at Richmond
RICHMOND, Va.
Jeff Gordon will try to race his way into NASCAR’s playoffs from the pole position.
The four-time series champion turned a track-record qualifying lap of 130.599 mph at Richmond International Raceway on Friday night to win his 73rd career pole.
