POLAND

Poland Township Safety Forces Appreciation Day will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the Poland Giant Eagle parking lot.

There will be free refreshments and games. Police, fire and ambulance vehicles will be there to view. Poland Township, Poland Village, Springfield Canine Unit, Ohio State Highway Patrol, Western Reserve Fire Department and Rural Metro Ambulance will be on display as well.

Akron Children’s Hospital will install child car seats for free. This event is sponsored by Aqua Ohio Inc., Poland Giant Eagle and Republic Services.

Truck accident kills 1

LISBON

A truck driver was killed and his passenger flown to a Pittsburgh hospital after a one-vehicle rollover accident at 5:53 p.m. Wednesday on state Route 7 in Elkrun Township.

A pickup truck driven by 43-year-old Jack E. Artup of Rogers was traveling on Route 7 when it went off the road, hit a guardrail, then went down a hill before it hit a rock and several trees, according to the Lisbon post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The truck overturned and rested on its roof. The passenger, Pamela S. Bradds, 45, also of Rogers, was taken to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. The patrol said seat belts were not used, and alcohol use is suspected.

South Ave. cleanup

Youngstown

The South Avenue Area Neighborhood Development Initiative, with support from Walmart and the Metro Assembly of God, plan a beautification project on South Avenue across from the Interstate 680 southbound exit ramp, running between the opposite entrance ramp and Dickson Avenue.

Volunteers are asked to gather at 8 a.m. Saturday at Dickson and South avenues to begin work at the key city gateway. The cleanup ends at 3 p.m. The project includes general cleanup and landscaping assistance. Some tools will be available, but volunteers are welcome to bring their own rakes or shovels.

Frozen gun found

YOUNGSTOWN

Police found a frozen gun while serving an arrest warrant at a home in the 1400 block of Indianola Avenue at 1:40 p.m. Wednesday.

The gun was found underneath a bed inside a box of frozen fish sticks, reports said. Police arrested Jamar Croom, 26, on a warrant for aggravated robbery, and a woman in the house was taken into custody on a theft warrant from Niles police, reports said.

Y-Town Run planned

Boardman

Vista Center of Boardman and Second Sole Athletic will host their inaugural 2013 Run Y-Town 10-mile race at 8:30 a.m. Sunday.

The race will begin at Second Sole, 755 Boardman Canfield Road, and runners will cross the finish line at Vista Center’s Ron Park Avenue parking lot.

Vista Center of Boardman will showcase its therapy staff, rehab patients and long-term care residents who will compete in a short walking/wheelchair course in the Ron Park Avenue parking lot at 10:30 a.m. on race day.

Run will close roads

Youngstown

On Sunday, these roads in Mill Creek Park will be closed from 6:30 until 10:30 a.m. for the Run Y-Town 10 Mile Run: East Newport, Old Mill, Chestnut Hill and West Newport drives.
