Rust Belt Theater Company to present NEVERMORE!

The Rust Belt Theater Company will present NEVERMORE!, an original musical by Robert Dennick Joki and Josh Taylor, based on the writing of Edgar Allan Poe. The show will take place Sept. 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21, each night at 8 p.m. The performance centers around the inmates of an insane asylum and intertwines more than twenty of Poe’s short stories and poems into the plot, juxtaposed with original music, and choreography by Marisa Zamary.

The cast includes Nicole Zayas, Kage Coven, Geri Dewitt, Taylor Jordyn, Hunter Thomas, Nicholas Forgac, JoEllen Jacob, Josh Taylor, David Cirelli, Marisa Zamary, Beth Farrow, Rachel Clifford, Starr McClure, Celena Coven and Robert Dennick Joki.

Steak fry to be Sept. 14

The Society of St. Vincent De Paul and the Knights of Columbus will host the third annual steak fry on Sept. 14 from 2-8 p.m. at the Byzantine Center at the Grove. Garden Forum Flower Show

There will be an autumn flower show on Sept. 21 from noon until 5 p.m. and Sept. 22 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. presented by the Garden Forum of Greater Youngstown at Fellows Riverside Gardens.

Join a digital scavenger hunt

Check in at Ford Nature Center to get a list of nature items to track down and document with a digital camera or phone. Everyone is welcome to the digital scavenger hunt, to be Sept. 29 at 2 p.m. This event is especially recommended for families with older children. Easy-moderate rating, miles are up to you.

Search for the pawpaw

The Metro Parks will host a search for the pawpaw Sept. 22 at 2 p.m. What is a pawpaw? Spend part of the first day of autumn with the Metro Parks and you will find out. Meet at Deerpath Trail off Hitchcock Road. The hike has a moderate rating of 1.5 miles.

Breakfast Botany set

Breakfast Botany: Maple will be Sept. 27 from 8:30-10 a.m. Start your morning with a brisk walk in the gardens. Return to the Garden Caf to enjoy a light breakfast and listen to interesting facts about trees. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register. The cost is $9 and $7 for FFRG members.

Learn gardening basics

Gardening Basics: Soils 101 will be Sept. 14 from 9:30-11 a.m. A healthy garden begins with healthy soil. Start from the ground up by learning the essentials of soil, how to amend your garden, and what living organisms you need to create the best underground ecosystem for your plants. Hike with your mutt

Bring your canine companion and hike the trails of Yellow Creek Park on Sept. 8 at 10 a.m. The hike has an intermediate rating due to unpaved trails and some hills, and will cover 1.5 miles. Meet at Yellow Creek Park at the Wetmore Drive parking lot.

Construct botanical pottery

Botanical Pottery: Autumn Leaf Bowl will be Sept. 17 from 5:30-8 p.m. Lynn Cardwell will teach students to construct a clay bowl embossed with leaf patterns.

The work will be glazed in autumn colors, fired and ready to take home approximately three to four weeks after the class. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register. The cost is $39 (FFRG member $30)

Learn about tremendous trees

Tremendous Trees will be Sept. 28 from 1:30-3 p.m. at Fellows Riverside Gardens. In the class, children ages 6 and up will discuss the importance of trees and their uses, identify trees in the gardens and create their own tree field guide to take home. Bounding with butterflies

The Metro Parks will host Bounding with Butterflies Sept. 19 and 28 from 11 a.m. until noon at Fellows Riverside Garden. Children ages 3-5 will enjoy learning about and looking for butterflies, reading a story together and creating butterfly craft. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register. The cost is $12, FFRG member $10.

Autumn plant sale to be Sept. 28, 29

Fellows Riverside Gardens will host an autumn plant sale Sept. 28 and 29 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Ornamental cabbage, gourds, pumpkins, chrysanthemums, plus a large variety of spring blooming bulbs will be for sale. Call Fellows Riverside Garden for more information.

Farmers and chefs create tastings

Top local chefs will be paired with local farmers or producers, and together they will create delicious tastings from fresh, locally grown produce, meat and other products on Sept. 21 from 6:30-11 p.m. Craft beer pairings, luscious desserts and the music of Gail George and Donkey Engine complete the evening. Enjoy the sunset at the farm

This end of summer celebration will be at the MetroParks Farm on Sept. 14 from 5-8. Play old-fashioned games, visit with farm animals, explore a giant corn maze, sample cider and homemade apple butter and ride a wagon pulled by draft horses. Bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on while you enjoy roasted marshmallows and entertainment around the campfire. Call Ford Nature Center for details.

ABWA meeting to be Sept. 10

The Mill Creek Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will meet at 6 p.m. Sept. 10 at A La Cart Catering on Lisbon Street in Canfield. Austintown trustee Jim Davis will talk about construction of Penn National Gaming’s racino, set for completion in the township in 2014. The menu for the upcoming meeting is stuffed chicken breast, baked ham, Au gratin potatoes, California blend tossed salad and Hawaiian pineapple crunch for dessert, as well as coffee, tea and rolls. The cost is $17.75 per person and guests are welcome.

Cub Scout packs to host round ups

Cub Scouting is a year round family program designed for boys who are in the first grade through fifth grade. Cub Scouting is the largest of the Boy Scouts of America’s three traditional membership programs with approximately. 1.7 million boys and their families involved throughout the United States.

The beginning of the school year is the traditional time for boys and their families to join Cub Scouts but a boy can join at any time. During the month of September, local Cub Scout Packs in Mahoning County and Hubbard, Ohio are hosting recruitment nights called Round-Ups to give boys and their families an opportunity to experience a little of the fun and adventure that the Cub Scouts experience all year long.

Audubon Society to host Judy Semroc

Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley has invited the public to “Birds, Bugs and Botany” Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. Judy Semroc, from the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, will speak about where to look for birds based on their food preferences. Historical society hosts open house

The Mahoning Valley Historical Society is hosting a free Founders Day open house at the Arms Family Museum on Sept. 15 from 1-5 p.m., in celebration of the Society’s 138th anniversary. The museum will be open for tours, the education staff will have indoor and outdoor games and activities for all ages and executive director Bill Lawson will lead a historic walking tour of Wick Avenue at 1:30 p.m.

Local church to sell ham loaves

Boardman United Methodist Church, located at 6809 Market St. in Boardman, will once again be selling ham loaves Sept. 17 from 12:30 p.m. until sold out. The loaves will be sold in packages of 6 for $12. There will be no pre-orders.

Farmers National Bank funds scholarship

Farmers National Bank reaffirmed its simultaneous commitment to community and education with a $3,000 gift to the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges (OFIC).

OFIC applied these funds to a scholarship for Ryan Pollifrone of Boardman. Pollifrone is a finance and political science major at Ohio Dominican University in Columbus.

Farmers has provided annual donations to the OFIC over the last 8 years. The OFIC, which is headquartered in Columbus, works with corporations, foundations and individuals to provide scholarship assistance to 100,000 students.

Just treasure sale to be Sept. 7

Bethel Lutheran Church will host a No Trash, Just Treasure sale Sept. 7 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be a $2 bag day on Sept. 7 beginning at 11 a.m.

First Night Youngstown seeks event staffers

First Night Youngstown is seeking event staffers to handle duties at venues on Dec. 31. Event staff will receive a small monetary stipend. A mandatory training will be in November. Shift start times will vary depending on the venue, but none will end later than 10 p.m., giving staff an opportunity to enjoy the remaining festivities and the fireworks.

Support group meeting to be Sept. 18

The Mahoning Valley Fibromyalgia Support Group will resume its monthly meetings on Sept. 18 by welcoming Dr Noah Erikson, Chiropractor. Dr Erikson believes in integrating traditional medical models to include complementary and alternative medicines and to treat each case individually. Soccer teams play for cancer

The Boardman High School girls soccer team will play in the fourth annual breast cancer game Sept. 28 at the high school. The game between the junior varsity and varsity will begin at 12:30 p.m. There will be several refreshments to purchase, baskets to raffle off and a short program to honor those who have been affected by this horrible disease.

Arms Museum plans Christmas program

Plans for this year’s Memories of Christmas Past are underway at the Arms Family Museum. The Mahoning Valley Historical Society is looking to the Valley community for some help with this year’s display. Highlights this year will be on local Valley traditions and will include family heirlooms, nativity collections, handmade cigar box doll houses and a large collection from John Garver, inventor of the locally produced Plakie twirler ornaments.

The society is looking for Christmas items related to downtown department stores. McKelveys, McCrorys, Higbees, Strouss-Hirshberg or any other downtown establishment are desirable. Items will be displayed on a short-term loan basis and will be returned to the owner after the exhibit closes in January.
