Scrappers defeat Auburn in finale

AUBURN, N.Y.

Juan Romero hit his sixth homer of the season and four Mahoning Valley pitchers combined on a shutout as the Scrappers beat the Auburn Doubledays in their season finale, 2-0, in a New York-Penn League on Wednesday at Falcon Park.

Caleb Hamrick (3-6) started and went five innings, giving up six hits with two walks and three strikeouts for the Scrappers (30-44).

Carlos Melo, Ben Heller and Trevor Frank (who got his third save) completed the shutout.

Romero homered to start the sixth inning for the Scrappers, who got an insurance run one out later when Grant Fink doubled in Claudio Bautista, who had reached on a throwing error.

Grant Fink added two hits, including a double, for Mahoning Valley, which finished fourth in the five-team Pinckney Division — 17 games behind State College.

Willman Rodriguez had two hits to lead Auburn (26-49), which had the worst record in the NYPL.
