Civil-service tests

WARREN

The Warren Civil Service Commission is hoping to have tests for entry-level police officer and firefighter in November. It would bring to six the number of promotional exams the city has given this year, possibly a record number for one year, said Sue Burns, civil-service commission clerk. Both departments have hired a number of people in recent months and exhausted their lists of qualified candidates. Police hirings mostly have been the result of retirements. The fire department has been hiring as a result of a $5 million federal staffing grant.

Raccoon-rabies baiting

AUSTINTOWN

The Ohio Department of Health’s annual raccoon-rabies baiting operation to prevent the spread of raccoon-rabies variant began Wednesday in Mahoning County and will finish Friday. So far in 2013, five cases of RRV have been confirmed in the Mahoning Valley: four raccoons in Mahoning County and one cat in Trumbull County. Baits are distributed by fixed-wing aircraft, helicopter and vehicles staffed by personnel from the US Department of Agriculture and local health departments. Residents should be aware of low-flying aircraft and keep children and pets away from the baits. The baits are not harmful to pets.

If someone has been exposed to the vaccine or has questions about the baiting, call the toll-free phone number on the bait, ODH at 614-752-1029, or Mahoning County District Board of Health at 330-270-2855, option 2.

High-speed chase

YOUNGSTOWN

A 31-year-old Youngstown man is facing fleeing-and-eluding, reckless-operation and driving- under-suspension charges after an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper said he tried to stop him for speeding after clocking him at 110 mph on I-680 in Austintown on Wednesday. The trooper pursued the driver, Jerry Burton, southbound on the interstate, from which Burton exited onto Meridian Road, before turning left on Mahoning Avenue and bailing out of the car at Schenley Avenue, the patrol said. Youngstown police apprehended Burton on foot. A female passenger was detained but not charged after the 3 p.m. incident. She said Burton was taking her to work and she begged him to slow down, according to the OSHP.
