Telephone scams
Telephone scams
CLEVELAND
The federal district court in northern Ohio is warning the public about telephone scams in which callers falsely claim they represent the federal jury office, threaten fines for shirking jury service and ask for Social Security and credit-card numbers and other sensitive information that could be used in identity theft and fraud. Most communication between federal court officials and potential jurors is through the U.S. mail, and real federal court personnel don’t ask for Social Security and credit-card numbers by telephone, according to Geri M. Smith, clerk of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, which has courtrooms in Cleveland, Akron, Youngstown and Toledo.
Man faces charges
CAMPBELL
Police pulled over a silver SUV shortly after 8 p.m. Friday after noticing a burned out rear license-plate light and several objects obstructing the driver’s view. Police arrested the driver for those violations, as well as on charges of possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia and driving under suspension.
Officers could smell marijuana when they approached the vehicle, but when questioned, the driver, 27-year-old Keylin Dawain Shaw of Youngstown, told them he’d already smoked any drugs inside the vehicle.
Police then searched the SUV, finding $583 in Shaw’s pocket, a glass jar filled with 20.8 grams of suspected marijuana, and a box of clear plastic sandwich bags.
In August 2012, Shaw fled into the Mahoning River in a failed attempt to elude police capture and faced charges of failing to comply with the orders of a police officer, receiving stolen property and failing to stop after an accident.

Boy steps on needle
WARREN
An 11-year-old Kenilworth Avenue Southeast boy was taken to ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital on Sunday afternoon after he stepped on a hypodermic needle in the yard just east of the Riverview Apartments, 700 Buckeye St., NW.
Roni Elix, 35, said the needle punctured her son’s foot while he was playing about 4 p.m. Elix said she found the needle and a spoon with residue on it. The police department took the needle and logged it into evidence in case it is needed for testing, police said.
Police have said most hypodermic needles confiscated by Warren police in recent months are being used to inject heroin.
