Scrappers win with one-hitter

AUBURN, N.Y.

Cole Sulser struck out 10 batters and allowed one hit as the Mahoning Valley Scrappers defeated the Auburn Doubledays, 2-0, in the first game of Tuesday’s doubleheader.

In the second game, the Doubledays rebounded with a 3-1 victory to split the New York-Penn League twinbill.

One game after the Scrappers’ second no-hitter in team history, Sulser threw six perfect innings. Sulser (3-2), who was coming off a six-inning, 10 strikeout performance in Jamestown last week, was at the top of his game. He started the game off by striking out the side.

Three outs away from consecutive team no-hitters, Wilman Rodriguez led off the Auburn with a single. Kerry Doane relieved Sulser and retired the next three batters for the save.

The Scrappers broke a scoreless tie with an unearned run in the fifth inning. Josh McAdams reached base on third baseman Cody Gunter’s throwing error and scored on Claudio Bautista’s two-out single.

In the sixth inning, Nellie Rodriguez scored the Scrappers’ other run when McAdams hit a two-out single.

Game two was a different story as the Scrappers gave up three unearned runs. Bautista homered for the Scrappers’ run.
