YOUNGSTOWN

Cassese’s MVR has announced registrations are being accepted for teams to participate in the inaugural Carmine Cassese Memorial Bocce Tournament, sponsored by Greenwood Chevrolet in Austintown.

The event is set for Sept. 27-29 at the MVR in Youngstown.

This year’s goal is to raise money to offer a scholarship in Cassese’s name at Youngstown State and for pancreatic cancer research at the James Medical Center at Ohio State.

“A group of us got together one night after bocce at the MVR and decided we needed — no, we wanted to do this to remember one of the greatest friends we’ve ever known,” said Rocky DeLisio.

Cassese was a native of Youngstown’s south side and a Cardinal Mooney and OSU graduate. He was a third-generation owner of the MVR, an 86-year-old Youngstown restaurant. He also served as head equipment manager for the YSU football program for 25 years.

There will be a payout of more than $5,000 to the top eight teams in the tournament. The entry fee is $140 per team. Each player will receive two beverage tickets and a “Carmstrong” T-shirt. Registrations can be done by phone and email any time before noon on Sept. 27.
