YSU sets State Farm Kids Tailgate Days

The Youngstown State University Athletic Department will have two Kids Tailgate Fun Days, presented by State Farm, during the next two home football games at Stambaugh Stadium in September.
The events will take place from 1-4 p.m. prior to the Penguins’ home football games against Morehead State on Sept. 7 and Duquesne on Sept. 21.
The tailgate parties will be located in the M-7 tailgate lot on Fifth Ave., just south of Stambaugh Stadium.

YSU volleyball
The Youngstown State volleyball team rallied from a two-sets-to-one deficit and took the fifth set 16-14 to beat Coastal Carolina in the 2013 season opener for both squads.
The Penguins won the first set 25-20 before dropping the next two 25-23 and 25-20.
YSU won the fourth 25-21 and the fifth, 15-14.
Alexis Egler finished with 15 kills while Erika West finished with 19 digs.
Casey D’Ambrose posted 45 assists and Jenna Cavanaugh contributed six kills and nine blocks.
Missy Hundelt had nine kills, seven assists, five aces, 19 digs and three blocks.
Scrappers routed, 11-0

The Batavia Muckdogs used an eight-run seventh inning to rout the Mahoning Valley Scrappers 11-0 on Saturday.
Carlos Lopez and Felix Munoz each had three hits for Batavia, 38-33.
The Scrappers (27-43) were held to four hits.
Emilee Gysegem wins two swimming events

Emilee Gysegem of Lakeview High School and Clarion Univ. won two events at the PSAC conference swimming championship.
She won the 200 IM (2:05.33) and 400 IM (4:27.11).
Both times qualified her for NCAA championships on March 6-9 in Birmingham, Alabama.
She also took sixth 200 backstroke (2:04.99).
Her 400 IM time was also a Clarion Univ. record.

Konig wins Vuelta 8th stage, Roche takes lead
ESTEPONA, Spain
Czech rider Leopold Konig used a final uphill surge to win the eighth stage of the Spanish Vuelta on Saturday, while Nicolas Roche took over the leader’s red jersey.
Konig passed Igor Anton before holding off Daniel Moreno’s final sprint to claim the 167-kilometer (104-mile) ride from Jerez de la Frontera ending with a category-one summit finish at Alto de Penas Blancas.
The 25-year-old Konig, who rides for NetApp-Endura, won a mountain stage of the Tour of California earlier this month.
Alpha takes Whitney Handicap at Saratoga
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.
Alpha held off Flat Out by a head Saturday in the $750,000 Whitney Handicap at Saratoga Race Course.
Trained by Kieran McLaughlin and ridden by John Velazquez, the 4-year-old Alpha ran 11/8 miles over a sloppy track in 1:49.28 and paid $17.40, $6.30 and $3.40. He earned $450,000 for Godolphin Stable. Flat Out returned $3.50 and $2.20, and Successful Dan, third of five, paid $2.80 to show.
