The 5

With Labor Day arriving Monday, our thoughts turn to the hard-working sitcom characters we’ve watched toiling away at their weekly jobs. But only a handful of workplace comedies have true staying power — like this elite group, ranked by seasons on the air:

v “Cheers (1982-1993): 11 seasons

v “Murphy Brown (1988-98): 10 seasons

v “The Office” (2005-13); “Night Court” (1984-92); “Alice” (1976-1985): nine seasons

v “Barney Miller” (1975-82); “Wings” (1990-97): eight seasons

v “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” (1970-77); “Designing Women” (1986-93): seven seasons

“ABC Fall Preview Special Presented by The Chew” (7 p.m., ABC): Will you have an appetite for this season’s new TV shows? Get a sample taste tonight via the “ABC Fall Preview Special Presented by The Chew.” Just be careful to guard against indigestion.

“TV’s Funniest of the Funniest — A Paley Center for Media Special” (9 p.m., NBC): This special with a long-winded title is a clip show in which sitcom stars — including Michael J. Fox and Betty White — talk about their favorite moments in TV comedy.

“MDA Show of Strength Telethon” (9 p.m., ABC): Ryan Seacrest, Paula Abdul, Backstreet Boys, Lee Ann Womack and Matthew Morrison are among the celebrities scheduled to appear on the “MDA Show of Strength Telethon.” The muscular dystrophy find-raiser, once an all-day affair, is now down to two hours.
