GIRARD

Members of the Youngstown Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. will host its 12th annual Tribute to Black Excellence on Sept. 27 at the Mahoning Country Club, 710 E. Liberty St.

The event will honor the 100th anniversary of the national sorority’s founding at Howard University in 1913.

A social hour will take place from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., and dinner will be served at 7:30.

The donation is $50 per person, and formal attire is requested.

Also featured will be a DJ, a free photo booth, a cash-only basket auction and a 50-50 raffle.

A brief program will honor the founders of DST, who were proud to be leaders of change on their campus and in their community.

They marched with other suffragettes and struggled for voting rights of all women, endangering their lives.

They left a legacy of scholarship still remembered today.

To buy tickets for the event, call 330-519-7145 or ask any local Delta member. Deltas are requesting ads and benefactors.

Newly elected leaders of the local chapter are Dr. Michelle McCollin, president, and Quiana Faison, first vice president. Chairwoman for the Centennial event is Dr. Sherri Lovelace-Cameron. Committee members are Michele Dotson, Gail Mannigault-Waters, Charlotte Grant, Susan Moorer, Dr. Bonique Morton, Chantelle Hallman, Crystal Davis, Tyla Smith, Renee Carnathan, Nikki Davis, Octavia Payne and Marcia Haire-Ellis.

For 100 years, Deltas have remained dedicated to the Five Point Programmatic Thrust that the founders developed: economic development, educational development, international awareness, physical-mental health and political awareness.
