Stand Down event set

YOUNGSTOWN

The inaugural Mahoning and Trumbull County Veteran Stand Down is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at 30 W. Front St.

Services offered will include Veterans Affairs eligibility screenings, on-site medical examinations, shelter and housing referrals, substance- abuse services, employment and job-training assistance, clothing and personal-care kits, legal services, counseling referrals and breakfast, lunch and a snack.

Council meeting

STRUTHERS

Representatives from the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky will discuss eligibility and benefits at the United Veterans Council meeting at 7 p.m. Sept. 16 at AMVETS Post 44, 305 Elm St.

This event is open to veterans and the public to learn about the Ohio’s long-term care facility for veterans. Families of wartime veterans are encouraged to attend.

ACADEMY NEWS

2 complete event

Two area Navy midshipman, Allison L. Pavlansky and Ryan P. Bailey, recently completed “Plebe” Summer at the Naval Academy, an event that prepares “plebes” for their first academic year at the academy.

Pavlansky, the daughter of Karen L. Pavlansky of Canfield and Patrick J. Pavlansky of Austintown, is a 2013 graduate of Canfield High School.

Bailey, the son of Christine J. and Gerald B. Bailey of Boardman, is a 2013 graduate of Boardman High School.

ROTC

Internship completed

Army Cadet James A. Kearns graduated from the Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps Leader’s Training Course at Fort Knox, Ky.

The four-week course is a leadership internship for cadets, at which college students experience and examine the Army without incurring an obligation to serve in the Army or ROTC, that can lead to becoming an Army officer.

Kearns, a student at Hiram College, is the son of Susan and Peter Kearns of Salem, and a 2011 graduate of Salem High School.

BASIC TRAINING GRADS

Air Force: Reserve Airman Jazmen A. Henry (Chaney High School, ’11), daughter of Mary and Anthony Henry of Boardman.

Navy: Seaman Alexandria N. Mitchell (Bloomfield High School, North Bloomfield, ’13), daughter of Michael G. and stepdaughter of Melissa S. Mitchell of Orwell, and granddaughter of Marsha L. Shannon of Rome.
