A Youngstown man accused of murder in the 2009 death of Arthur F. Gilmore of Salem was served a secret indictment on Tuesday.
Christopher J. Adkins, 27, is charged with murder.
Adkins, Gilmore’s stepson, was served in Mahoning County with the indictment and taken into custody Tuesday morning on Linwood Avenue in Youngstown by the U.S. Marshals Task Force.
The indictment, which reads he purposely caused the death of Gilmore on Sept. 26, 2009, was issued by the Columbiana County grand jury late last week.
Gilmore, who lived on North Broadway in Salem, was 62 at the time of his death.
Salem Detective David Talbert said police and medical personnel responded to the home that morning for a medical call. At the time police arrived, Gilmore had already been transported to Salem Community Hospital, where he was declared dead.
Talbert said the investigation into Gilmore’s death began after he spoke with family members at the house. The death appeared suspicious to Talbert, who asked for an autopsy to be done, and he began taking statements from family members and friends.
Although the coroner eventually ruled the cause of death as undetermined, the manner of death was ruled asphyxia by smothering.
