LIBERTY

Liberty High School students will participate in a Pink-Out Tailgate event at 5 p.m. Friday before the Liberty- Champion football game to raise money for Liberty’s Relay for Life.

Activities at the tailgate event in the Liberty High School parking lot include face painting, a bouncy house (weather permitting), tattoos and food.

Liberty’s Relay for Life is at 6 p.m. May 16 in Church Hill Park on Belmont Avenue.

Boot drive planned

The Handel’s “Koins for Kids” campaign season kicks off from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday with a firefighters’ boot drive to benefit Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley.

Area firefighters will collect donations at these intersections: Canfield and Meridian Roads, Youngstown and Austintown fire departments; Belmont Avenue and state Route 304, Liberty Fire Department; Youngstown-Poland Road and Wilson Avenue, Struthers Fire Department; South Avenue and Mathews Road, Boardman Fire Department; East Market Street and Elm Road, Warren Fire Department; and Shields Road and state Route 46, Canfield Fire Department.

Also, registration is underway for the school portion of the campaign that runs Dec. 2-13. Schools in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties are invited to register by calling Handel’s at 330-702-8270.

Benefit dinner

BOARDMAN

A benefit dinner and silent auction for cancer victim Sue (Brinkman) Drewette is from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday at Boardman United Methodist Church, 6809 Market St.

Drewette, who recently retired from Warren City Schools after working 31 years as a teacher of the visually impaired, has leukemia and is scheduled for a bone marrow transplant.

She was also a mobility orientation specialist with the school district.

The dinner includes homemade meatloaf, mashed potatoes with gravy, green beans, tossed salad, roll with butter, cake and beverage. The cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children 8 and under. Carry-out is available.

Free workshop

NORTH LIMA

Dr. Joseph Pederzolli of EyeCare and Vision Therapy Center, 11995 South Ave., will host a free vision and learning workshop from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 6.

Parents, educators and professionals are invited to the free workshop that will help identify children whose vision restricts learning, how to build school performance by enhancing vision, how and why vision development works and more.

2 men indicted

WARREN

Two men spotted by two police detectives during a burglary on Garfield Drive Northeast have been indicted on burglary charges.

Darrell E. Sims, 43, of Sixth Street Southwest, and Michael F. Saldana, 18, of Taylor Avenue, Girard, will be arraigned Nov. 13.

If convicted, each faces up to eight years in prison.

The detectives were in their unmarked police cars and in plain clothes at 1:40 p.m. Sept. 13 when they noticed two men on foot, then saw them breaking into the back of a house.

The suspects ran, but one detective caught up to Saldana. Neighbors helped police locate Sims, and he was arrested at Central Parkway and East Market Street.

Police said the two suspects took a box of coins worth $1,000 and jewelry.

Open house at school

NEW castle, Pa.

The New Castle School of Trades will have an open house from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 7.

The school recently celebrated its two-year anniversary in a new facility that opened in July 2011.

Open-house participants will be able to tour the facility and receive information on the school’s programs and services offered, and meet and hear from some of the region’s most successful companies.

Representatives from Dearing Compressor, Exterran, Cleveland Brothers, TMK-Ipsco, Joy Cone, Team Fishel and others will be on hand to provide information and insight on the qualifications and skills necessary to take advantage of the vast employment opportunities becoming available throughout the region due to the upshift in manufacturing and the oil and gas industry.
