CHARDON

A Northeast Ohio school that was the site of a shooting last year is getting a $269,530 federal grant designed to help districts recover from traumatic events.

Chardon Local Schools is getting the grant from a U.S. Department of Education program. The district may use it for social workers to provide trauma screenings and counseling to students and staffers who witnessed or were victims of the tragedy.

The Plain Dealer reports that the grant was announced in Washington Tuesday by U.S. Rep. Dave Joyce, who was Geauga County’s chief prosecutor last year when the shooting occurred.

Student T.J. Lane opened fire the high school’s cafeteria on Feb. 27, 2102, killing three students and wounding others. He has been sentenced to life in prison.
