Father dies after giving away bride

CLEVELAND

An Ohio cancer patient has died less than three weeks after attending his daughter’s wedding on a gurney to fulfill his promise to walk her down the aisle.

A spokesman for University Hospitals in Cleveland says 56-year-old Scott Nagy died at the hospital Monday.

The terminally ill Brunswick man wore a tuxedo and arrived by ambulance for his daughter Sarah’s Oct. 12 church wedding in Strongsville. Guests cried and clapped as the pair made their way down the aisle with help from a volunteer team of medical professionals.

The Plain Dealer reported that from the gurney, Nagy gave away the 24-year-old bride, and when she burst into tears, he reminded her not to streak her makeup.

Severed finger leads to theft suspect

GLENDALE, Ariz.

A severed finger left at the crime scene helped police in Arizona arrest a man suspected of trying to steal copper wire.

An air conditioning company employee told Glendale police someone tried to steal the wire from his truck Oct. 7.

The spool of wire — worth more than $300 — had been pulled out about 20 feet from the truck, and what appeared to be a cut off finger was caught in the wiring.

Police retrieved the finger as evidence, and forensic technicians were able to match the fingerprint to 29-year-old Joshua Allen Goverman.

Goverman told detectives he lost part of a finger while working on a car. He was booked on suspicion of theft.

Little boy sits in pope’s chair

VATICAN CITY

Pope Francis was delivering a homily but a little boy stole the show.

Francis was speaking in St. Peter’s Square about the important role grandparents play when a little boy walked up behind him and confidently climbed up and sat down on the pontiff’s white chair.

The Vatican says Francis was surrounded by elderly faithful and their grandchildren Saturday night at a rally to encourage family life when the boy came up, wearing a striped shirt, jeans and sneakers.

Acting like an indulgent grandpa, Francis let the boy explore the area undisturbed before tens of thousands of people. The pope smiled while reading his speech as the boy sat in the empty chair, gazed up at him and even at one point clung to the pontiff’s legs.
