St. Patrick students learn fire safety

Members of the Eagle Joint Fire District spent part of an afternoon with students at St. Patrick School reviewing the importance of fire safety in their homes.

The theme for the 2013 Fire Prevention Week was “Prevent Kitchen Fires.”

Students learned that kitchen fires start small and quickly get big.

They were told to remind their parents when they are cooking to never leave a pot or pan unattended.

Students also practiced Stop, Drop and Roll and learned to have an exit plan in case of a fire and a meeting place for their family to make sure everyone is out.

Firefighters stressed never to hide under a bed or in a closet, because when firefighters come into your home to help you, it will be hard for them to find you.

Seventh-grader Gabe Fagundas put on a complete set of turn-out gear to experience the weight of the equipment a firefighter must wear to be safe when entering a house fire.

Students were able to inspect the truck, learn about the equipment used and spray water from a fire hose.
