YSU soccer upended by Milwaukee, 3-2

Milwaukee, Wis.

Senior Allison Ludwig scored two goals, but Milwaukee scored twice in the final 12 minutes to escape with a 3-2 win over the Youngstown State women’s soccer team on Saturday.

The Penguins are 4-11-1 and 2-4 in the Horizon League, while the Panthers are 7-8-1, 5-1.

Ludwig, whose goals were her first two of the season, scored four minutes into the match.

After junior Chelsey Haney’s shot was deflected, Ludwig collected the ball in front of an open net for her first score at the 4:15 mark.

Rachel Morrison’s cross from the right corner found an open Ludwig in the middle of the box for a one-timer to make it 2-1.

There will be a Youngstown State baseball pitcher-catcher camp at the WATTS Facility on Nov. 29 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

The camp is for players in grades 8-12.

The undefeated Austintown Fitch football team will play Cardinal Mooney at YSU’s Stambaugh Stadium on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Advance tickets will be sold on Thursday and Friday during all lunches (11:30 a.m. - 12:50 p.m.) at Fitch High and from 6-7:30 p.m. in the South Circle Ticket Booth.

Softball champs

The ROC Elite’s 12U girls softball team won the 2013 Thunder Elite Fall Ball tournament championship.

Playing on the team are Aylsyn Duffy, Julianna Hutchinson, Tori Salem, Bella Burrelli, Autumn Black, Mikayla Smith, Morgan Huey, Sammy Pykare, Alyssa Salem and Lizzie Malczak.

2014 Tour de France has a bit of everything

Tracing a route that limits the strengths of defending champion Chris Froome, the 2014 Tour de France will rattle over bone-jarring cobblestones, pay homage to World War I battlefields, climb unfamiliar mountains in the east of France and have only one time trial.

Starting in Leeds, England, on July 5, the 101st Tour ends 22 days later, as is traditional, on the Champs-Elysees in Paris.

With 25 ascents, the same as the 2012 edition won by Bradley Wiggins and only three fewer than this year’s centennial dominated by Froome, the 2014 race will again suit strong climbers.

Neymar ignites Barcelona to 2-1 win

BARCELONA, Spain

Neymar scored one goal and set up Alexis Sanchez’s winning chip shot in the 78th minute, carrying Barcelona past Real Madrid 2-1 in the first “clasico” since the defending champions added Neymar and Real signed Gareth Bale.

With Lionel Messi oddly quiet for Barcelona, Neymar opened the scoring in the 19th minute from close range after a pass from Andres Iniesta.

Two minutes earlier, Neymar struck the ball into the arms of Madrid goalkeeper Diego Lopez with the game’s first shot.
