The Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber has announced that Joseph D. Gierlach Jr., vice president of technical training and support at TEGG, a power services management company, will speak at the Mahoning Valley Safety Council breakfast Friday.

Gierlach will cover many key points on power and personal protection equipment.

The breakfast starts at 7:15 a.m., with a program from 8 to 9 a.m. afterward at Ciminero’s Banquet Centre, 123 N. Main St.

Pierre’s starts making peppermint ice cream

Pierre’s Ice Cream Co., based in Cleveland, announced recently that it has started to make the first batch of its Peppermint Stick Premium Ice Cream.

The holiday tradition is expected to be available in stores soon.

Kohl’s opens at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving

YOUNGSTOWN

Kohl’s Department Stores will open at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving, joining the list of retailers kicking off the Black Friday shopping frenzy earlier than usual.

Kohl’s stores will open for 28 hours straight from 8 p.m. Nov. 28 until midnight Nov. 29, the retailer announced last week.

AEP: Net income sinks 11 percent in third quarter

COLUMBUS

Utility company American Electric Power said its net income sank 11 percent in the third quarter, weighed down by impairment charges from its operations in Texas and Kentucky.

During the quarter, AEP took a $111 million charge related to construction of a plant in Texas and a charge of $33 million for work on a project in Kentucky.

AEP said the charges totaled $100 million after taxes, or 21 cents per share.

American Electric Power Co. said its net income declined to $433 million, or 89 cents per share, for the three months ended Sept. 30.

Lawmakers push tax-collection plans

COLUMBUS

Two Republican state lawmakers in Ohio are pushing a series of proposals to make local taxes easier to collect and pay, in an effort to keep and retain businesses.

State Reps. Cheryl Grossman and Mike Henne recently released details of their latest proposal on municipal income taxes.

Changes would include consolidating tax returns to reduce compliance costs and standardizing interest rates and penalties.

They also want to establish uniform due dates for all municipal tax returns and uniform withholding requirements for all employers.
