Man assaulted

YOUNGSTOWN

Police reports say a South Side man was stabbed in the forearm while he was sleeping about 1 a.m. Thursday and hit in the head with a skillet and a hammer.

Officers called to 256 E. Philadelphia Ave. found a couple fighting on the front porch, and Jorge Perez, who they said was drunk, said he was awakened by pain in his arm and that his girlfriend, Shirley Ann Starks, 68, had stabbed him.

Perez told police she then hit him in the head with a skillet and hammer in the kitchen. Police found two hammers, a skillet and blood on the kitchen floor, reports said.

Perez, who was bleeding profusely, was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center. Police arrested Starks and took her to Mahoning County jail.

Holiday tree sought

YOUNGSTOWN

The city’s parks and recreation department is searching for a 2014 holiday tree to be displayed downtown. The tree must come from a front yard within Youngstown city limits. If chosen, the homeowners will be presented with a plaque of appreciation at the downtown tree-lighting ceremony.

Fails to appear

WARREN

Darrell E. Peterman, 25, the brother of Youngstown State University football player Dale Peterman, failed to appear for court Thursday on felony and five misdemeanor charges in connection with a traffic stop in which he purportedly said he was his brother.

Darrell Peterman of Brookline Avenue, Youngstown, was scheduled for a preliminary hearing in Warren Municipal Court. Court officials say a warrant is likely for his arrest.

Grant received

YOUNGSTOWN

Beatitude House Green Clean has received a $55,000 grant from the national Catholic Campaign for Human Development to assist with the further development of the co-op, including additional training for its board of directors and development of a new business plan.
