Sandwich sale supports cancer patient

Prince of Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2985 Center Road, Poland, will hold a sausage sandwich sale to support a member who is undergoing chemotherapy. The fall fundraiser is scheduled for Nov. 9 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., or until sandwiches are sold out. A suggested donation of $6 provides a sandwich, chips, and a can of pop. Cheese is 50 cents extra. All sales are drive through only - no pre-sale.

Blanket drive to begin Nov. 1

The Poland Lions Club is sponsoring a Blanket of Kindness Drive from Nov. 1-17. They are collecting new and gently used washable blankets and comforters in all sizes for children and families in need. Donation sites are Friendly’s Restaurant, Poland United Methodist Church, Poland Home Savings and Loan, Poland Walgreens and Poland Union Elementary School. Monetary donations can be mailed to The Poland Lions Blanket Drive, P.O. Box 5424 Poland, Ohio 44514.

Library to close for the holidays

All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed for Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11, and Thanksgiving, Nov. 28.

Author to sign books at library

Meet Les Cochran, author of the novel “Signature Affair,” will visit the Poland Library on Nov. 18 at 4 p.m. The former president of YSU will be selling his book and signing copies. Sponsored by the Friends of PLYMC.

Author to present

Author Allan May will present at the Poland library on Nov. 13 at 6:30 p.m. May is the author of “Crimetown, USA” and “The Jungle Inn,” chronicles of mafia activity in the Mahoning Valley. He will discuss “Crimetown, USA” and do a book-signing. The Friends of PLYMC will meet. For adults.

The Poland library will host Locate Your Customers: exploring the Library’s Business Databases on Nov. 2 at 10 a.m. Join Stuart Gibbs, the Business and Investment Center librarian, to learn about how to target potential customers. The featured databases, D&B Million Dollar Database and Reference USA (Business, HealthCare, New Business, and Residential modules), bring timely and authoritative information to develop strategic marketing. Screen your blood pressure

Easter Seals Private Duty Blood Pressure Screening - Providing free health assessments at the Poland library on Nov. 26 from 1-4 p.m. A nurse will be available for blood pressure screenings, pulse, oxygen saturation and weight. Easter Seals Private Duty is offering this service thanks to a grant to provide assessments to seniors in Mahoning County aged 60 plus, but participation will not be limited to seniors at the library.

Give blood at the library

The Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross will sponsor a blood drive at the Poland library on Nov. 27 from 12:30-6:30 p.m.

Bring your eReader to the Poland library on Nov. 2 from 10-11 a.m. The librarians will show you how to download eBooks from the library’s digital catalog on the website. For adults. Space is limited.

The Poland library will host Appy Hour on Nov. 4 from 6-7 p.m. for adults. Learn all about popular apps for smart phones and mobile devices. See a variety of apps that will help you connect to your, find a good place to eat, keep you entertained in a long grocery line, find a great new recipe, or find great music to listen to on your walk. Show what you know

The Poland library will host Show What You Know: Machine Knitting on Nov. 20 at 7 p.m. Adults and teens are invited to a machine knitting class to make and embellish a snowman toy or ornament. The snowman will be on display during the month of November. Class is one hour in the children’s room at the Poland library. Reserve your spot by calling 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland Library.

Catching fire at the library

The Poland library will be celebrating the movie release of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire on Nov. 14 at 6 p.m. There will be games, crafts, food, prizes and more. For teens in grades 7-12.

Make rainbow loom bracelets

Children in grades 4 and up, are invited to the Rainbow Loom craft program on Nov. 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Boardman library. Rainbow Loom bracelets are fun, unique and great to give away as presents. Each session is limited to the first 12 tweens and teens who sign up. Beginners will be walked through the single pattern bracelet, but templates will be provided for loomers with more experience. Warning: Rainbow Loom Kits contain small rubber bands and sharp points.

Celebrate American Indian Awareness Month with the Redhawk Native American Cultural Society on Nov. 5 at 6:30 p.m. at the Poland library. Gene Allison, a member of the Red Hawk American Indian Cultural Society, will appear in full regalia, share artifacts and stories and answer questions. Fun and educational for the whole family.

The Poland library will host Pajama Jam: Sleepy-Time Fun for the Family on Nov. 25 at 6:30 p.m. Put on your pajamas and bring out the whole family for stories and fun.

Lego my library on Tuesday

Children, age 6 and up, can create Lego designs at the Poland library on Nov. 19 from 6-7 p.m. Legos will be provided.

MCCTC students open salon

Cosmetology students at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center opened The Salon at MCCTC to the public. Salon hours are Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays 8:15-10:30 a.m. Appointments are recommended. The cosmetology students will offer haircuts, styling, perms, hair color, manicures and hair removal. All services are performed by students under the supervision of their instructor and prices start at just $5. New to the salon this year is a retail space with Paul Mitchell product, shellac manicures and a redesigned salon space.

Poland student to perform in YSU play

Mark Warchol of Poland, a junior at Youngstown State University, is a member of the cast of University Theater’s production of “Tribunal.” Warchol is majoring in Theater Studies and plays the role of Arthur “Izzy” Borovitz.

The play in YSU’s Spotlight Theater runs Oct. 26 and 27. Saturday performances begin at 7:30 p.m. while the Sunday matinee performances begin at 2 p.m.

The play is written by YSU alum Mark Milo Kessler and is directed by YSU alum Tracy Schuler Vivo.

Tickets are free for YSU students with ID; $10 for adults; $5 for senior citizens, YSU faculty and staff and high school and college students from other universities, Penguin Club members and YSU alumni. Junior Womens Club to have Halloween Carnival

The Poland Junior Womens Club is sponsoring a Halloween Carnival Oct. 26 from 1-2:30 p.m. in the cafetorium at McKinley Elementary School for children in preschool through second grade, accompanied by an adult. Poland Players to present comedy

The Poland Players will present “Get Bill Shakespeare off the Stage,” a comedy by Joseph Robinette on Nov. 21, 22 and 23 at 7 p.m. in the Poland Seminary High School auditorium. Caring family portrait sessions offered

Autism Society of Ohio and Mill Creek MetroParks are excited to offer a caring, patient family portrait session for families with disabilities thanks to the generous offer of Positive Light Photography

The 20-minute per family session will take place outdoors weather permitting, but a seasonal indoor session will be set up in case of inclement weather.

Reservations will be taken for the three 20-minute slots per hour. The barns will be open and complimentary hayrides will be offered to participants.

Families will receive a free sitting and a best choice 5x7 to be mailed to them within two weeks.

For $10, they will be mailed not only their photo, but a disc of all the professional-level photos taken during their session allowing for personal use and reproduction of your choice.

Girls Night Out to be Oct. 29

The Poland Women’s Club will be hosting its third annual Girls Night Out fundraiser on Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. at Holy Family Parish Hall. There will be a Chinese Auction. Admission is $20 and includes 20 prize tickets, appetizers, beverages, and desserts. Proceeds from the event will support local organizations in the Poland community and Mahoning County.

Local club to host forum

The Poland Presbyterian Church Breakfast Club will sponsor a candidate forum at 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 27 in Fellowship Hall. Candidates for Poland Township Trustee and Poland Board of Education will present their platforms. In each case there are three candidates running for two positions. Candidates for Trustee are Mark Naples, Robert Lidle, and Joanne Wollet. Those running for the School Board are Dr. Larry Dinopoulos, Richard Weaver, and Maureen Rothrauff. The public is invited to attend.

Retire old flags

During the month of October, Shepherd of the Valley – Poland is taking in tired, torn and faded American flags that need to be retired.

Most flags are not retired and burned with the ceremony they deserve. Some are burned in a barrel; some in a pile on the ground; others are cremated at a funeral home. Shepherd of the Valley wants to change this.

Flags can be dropped off at Shepherd of the Valley in Poland (301 W. Western Reserve Road) between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily. All flags collected will be delivered to a local veteran’s group for proper disposal.

Bow-Wow-Ween to be Oct. 26

Legacy Dog Rescue will sponsor Bow-Wow-Ween, a community Halloween event from 11-3 p.m. Oct. 26 at Austintown Township Park, Pogany Pavilion, located at 6000 Kirk Road. To participate, dogs must be leashed at all times, up to date on vaccinations and handled by an adult.

Among the features will be pet/child photos, refreshments, basket auction, 50-50 raffle, games, and goodies. Vendors and other rescue groups will also be present. For a $5 donation, a pet or child can be entered in all costume contests. Prizes will be awarded for best costumes in a number of categories. Proceeds will help Legacy Dog Rescue, a local nonprofit group, save dogs that have been abandoned, abused or neglected, and place them into loving homes.

Casino bus trip set

Team Schein is hosting a bus trip to Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh, on Nov. 8.

We will be departing from 760 Boardman Canfield Road, Boardman, at 5 p.m. and will return to the same location approximately 12:30 a.m.

The cost is $30 per person and this includes $15 in free play and $5 food voucher. All seats are non-refundable.

Poland Historical Society sets fall schedule

The Poland Historical Society meets the third Tuesday of each month at the Little Red Schoolhouse, located at 4515 Center Road in Poland Township. Each month the regular business meetings will start at 6:30 p.m. with a free program planned for 7:30 p.m. which are open to the public. The program schedule is as follows:

Nov. 19 – Following the business meeting, historical society trustees will talk about why and how “Poland” got its name.

Dec. 17 – Annual Christmas dinner for members will be offered at the schoolhouse.

Arms Museum plans Christmas program

Plans for this year’s Memories of Christmas Past are underway at the Arms Family Museum. The Mahoning Valley Historical Society is looking to the Valley community for some help with this year’s display. Highlights this year will be on local Valley traditions and will include family heirlooms, nativity collections, handmade cigar box doll houses and a large collection from John Garver, inventor of the locally produced Plakie twirler ornaments. The society is looking for Christmas items related to downtown department stores. McKelveys, McCrorys, Higbees, Strouss-Hirshberg or any other downtown establishment are desirable. Items will be displayed on a short-term loan basis and will be returned to the owner after the exhibit closes in January.
